State Track Day One 2011

June 3, 2011 - Zach Baker
I feel like I've done this before. But we're here for coverage of area athletes at the State Track meet in Columbus. Our first event is at 9:45 a.m., when Mohawk and Calvert compete in the 4 x 800 boys relay. That's about 24 minutes away. Hopefully for the runners they won't run five sixths of the way and then put it on autopilot like the Miami Heat last night.

And that's my last Heat dig of the day. I think.

Mohawk 4 x 8 comes in third, Calvert 4 x 8 comes in seventh.

Katie Depinet, the SE thrower, just went fifth (128 even) in the discus. Carey's Taylor Decker (122-3) went eighth, with hugs and high fives all the way around. I just returned from the throwing area here, and I must say we are lucky to have a nice day, I think one of the three we've had in the last six weeks.

And back from the throwing area. Ashton Daniel goes ninth in shot, SE throwers Tyler Johnson and Ben Hahler don't make the finals in the shot.

Our next race is about two hours away, when Columbian's Autumn Nichols runs in the 300 hurdle semis. I figure she has a decent chance of making finals and placing tomorrow. But until the semi, I'll be in this room typing up quotes for tomorrow's stories.
