TU men v. Ashland
February 5, 2011 - Zach Baker
If TU has hopes of making the GLIAC Tournament, this game is a must. Travis Spahr is out of the starting lineup for the third straight game. Brandon Harris starts in his place.
Ashland has made three treys, Tiffin hasn't made a basket yet, and Ashland leads early, 11-1. Tiffin has been giving AU 3's, and so far it's not working.15:24.
Tiffin is one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the GLIAC, but today, the Dragons are one shot and done, and when you're not shooting well, that's a problem. TU is down, 22-15, with 7:45 to go in the half.
Ashland has been hitting 3's from all over the place, and have extended its lead to 42-30. David Harris has been hot, scoring 13 points and banking in a few treys.
It's easy to say what TU is not doing when its down by 10. But in this case, it's just a matter of Ashland being red hot from deep. What can you do when a team is that hot? It's 42-32 at the break.
8 of 12 from deep. The Ashland broadcaster tells me this is not normal. Tiffin is 5 of 9.
The Dragons came out hot in the second half, cutting the AU lead to 2, led by Graessle, who has 19. But AU answered, and now leads, 51-42 with 14:43 left. TU is just not rebounding well right now. After a miss on a foul shot on a three point play attempt, AU tipped it back and scored a basket. TU has also been called for six fouls, Ashland two.
David Harris just hit another 3, and Ashland leads, 61-48. Harris has had it working all day for Ashland, and Tiffin just hasn't had much scoring inside to counter. Graessle answers with a trey, and the lead is 10.
Too many times, TU has allowed Ashland to push the action, and then they end up right under the basket for a layup. Meanwhile, TU is not scoring much inside, aside fromn the occasional steal and fastbreak layup or dunk. Ashland leads, 68-57 at the 5:53 mark. TU is settling for a lot of 3s, and aside from Graessle, who now has 24, no one is hitting.
Tiffin has went icy cold from the floor. It has started getting offensive boards, but the shots, be it short or long, are not falling. Ashland leads by 10, 70-60, with 2:51 to go.
Dragons just struggled to make baskets down the stretch, and lose, 81-69. Women's game is next.
