Time To Tee It Up

January 7, 2011 - Al Stephenson
The PGA Tour's 2011 season opener is underway. While it is a little sad that I can't return to the Aloha State (my wife and I were there in October to celebrate 30 years of marriage) to watch the Tournament of Champions, I can take solace in the fact that I am leaving in the morning to go to Florida. What awaits in Florida? Well golf of course.

This is the time of year that my buddies and I head south to start our own golf season. A week of long drives and meandering putts, stuck iron shots and way too many wayward shots - it is what we love to do. Spending time with your friends playing the game of golf is as good as it gets. All right, maybe I should say NEARLY as good as it gets. I'll admit that spending a week in Hawaii with my wife doesn't exactly take a back seat to this trip.

There is one difference between my season opener and the PGA's. All right maybe more than one difference if you are going to grade the quality of golf. I'm talking about how the pros will tee it up again next week and the week after that, while my guys will simply whet our appetite for the game. After the week is over, we put our clubs back in the basement. It will be the third week of April (trip #2 to Tennessee) before we get to play again. After that one we start looking for weather breaks to play here at home.

For me, this trip helps me get through the winter. The other three trips are just fun. That's right. I take four golf trips a year and get this - my wife does not play the game. She allows me to take the trips without complaint because she knows that golf is my passion. For those of you who might suggest that I am lucky to be married to this woman - I agree wholeheartedly.

The view from my seat - sitting across from her at the dining room table - is indeed a great one.
