Berg men v. Alma

December 8, 2010 - Zach Baker
With 16:52 left to go in the first half, Alma leads Heidelberg, 6-4. HU coach Anthony Gholson said last night that the Scots like the outside shots. When they connect, they are very dangerous. They haven't made one yet, but Heidelberg's offense is off to a slow start.

With 11:20 to go, the Student Princes have opened up a 14-10 lead following back-to-back layups from Victor Fortkamp and Wes Paramore. The Scots have yet to hit a trey. It's very early in his career, but Fortkamo reminds me a bit of for HU swingman Andrew Lemmon. Fotkamp has the size (listed at 6-8, though I think he's a few inches shorter), but has a nice shot.

With six minutes remaining until halftime, Heidelberg leads, 22-20. Clifton Powell just made a steal, pushed it ahead to Darion Capers, who thre it toward Fortcap, who tipped it home. Fortkamp has nine. Heidelberg leads, 28-23, 4:14 until the half.

Heidelberg takes a 40-31 lead into halftime. It was a up to 12, but the Scots hit a three at the buzzer. HU started asserting itself inside, and took control in the final minutes. With a team like Alma, that likes to shoot from deep, no lead is big enough.

Alma 2 of 9 shooting 3s in the first half.

Alma has fought back, and trails 46-42 at the 14:34 mark. Heidelberg got a little too fancy on some possessions and threw the ball away. Alma also is being a little more aggressive taking the ball to the hoop. Wes Paramore just drained a right wing three. HU lead, 49-42. (13:25)

Heidelberg's bench agains steps up, turning a 4-point lead into an 11-point lead after a Quinton Aden jumper. (12:14)

Heidelberg leads, 55-46 with 11:10 left. Gholson goes to his third team, after Alma's Brett Lackie gets a block.

Suddenly, the Scots are on a 12-0 run. Gholson may regret going to the third team, as it created no offense and Alma's Cory Schneider just drained a right wing 3. You can't blame the run on the third team, as the second team was getting a little sloppy on defense. Either way, the first team comes back and Paramore misses a 3. It's contagious.

Davis gets a big offensive board of a missed free throw that Heidelberg converted into points, then Givner drained a fadeaway to bump Heidelberg's lead back up to seven with 7:41 to go. Heidelberg leads, 61-54.

Alma responds with a 7-0 run to tie it, then Pat Barrett unloads a trey andd nails it. Tuley follows with a layup and Heidelberg is up 5,but it's 66-63 now with 4:50 left. Greg Silverthorn has 12 points for Alma.

Heidelberg has allowed too many layups, allowing alma to go across the paint and under the basket. It's sustained it, along with just enough 3s.

A layup by Brett Lackie gives Alma a 69-68 lead for its first time in forever. Paramore answers with a trey. 71-69 Heidelberg, 2:15 left.

After a Corey Schneider left corner 3, Almas grabs a 74-71 lead. Heidelberg has been too sloppy tonight. A turnover with the game on the line set it up

Heidelberg is down 3, Alma has the ball. Alma is 9 of 10 on foul shots, a number of them 1 and 1s.
