September 1, 2010 - Al Stephenson
As I have done all year, it is time to choose what sporting event you would attend in the month of September if given the opportunity. This month I will work backwards. I will tell you where I'm going - and then explain why I'm not choosing something else.
If given the opportunity in September, I would attend the U.S. Open tennis tournament in Flushing Meadows, New York. I am not a tennis player nor a big fan of the game. I would like to see the best in the world play the game however. I would have loved to have gone to Wimbledon, or the French Open, or to Austrailia to see one of the majors, but other events took precedence for me.
That is part of the reason why I'm choosing the U.S. Open as my tennis venue. Seeing Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, the Williams sisters or Maria Sharapova (too bad Anna Kournikova doesn't play anymore - yes, I'm one that found her very attractive) would be a lot of fun. Perhaps more significantly, there aren't a lot of good choices in September.
You could go see a college football game. There are some great early season matchups. Perhaps an early season NFL game would be more to your liking. Early games in either the NFL or college just cannot top the U.S. Open.
How about a world basketball championship matchup. If you are an NBA fan we have an all star team competing. Still doesn't match tennis for me.
Some baseball games with playoff implications will take place this month. I'm a big baseball fan and that intrigues me, but again tennis would be my first choice. Besides if the tennis gets a little boring, I can walk across the street and take in a Mets game!
The view from my seat suggests that the U.S. Open is September's best bet. If we could just get some of those ladies to quit grunting...
