July 6, 2010 - Janet DelTurco

I'm hot! No, not that way. That stage of life is long fact it was never there at all. I just cannot deal with temperatures in the 90s and get done what needs doing in the garden. I have been outside the last two days and picked a panful of bush beans for the freezer each time, and I gave the fairy garden a watering and touch-up, but then the heat drove me in. Everything needs watering and trimming, and of course weeding, but I just cannot get up the energy to do it. The only beings to be enjoying these extreme temperatures are the bugs. While I was in the bean patch today I got a whole new set of mosquito bites, and found a few Japanese beetles. The major invasion of these pests has not arrived yet, I just keep picking off and drowning the occasional visitor. Over 100 people visited on the recent garden tour, and of course they walked past the fairy garden on their way to the side border. I have moss growing between the stepping stones there, and while it is able to tolerate regular foot traffic with no problem, this was too much and it is looking rather puny. Moss hates hot sun as well, so the combination means I have to give it some therapy. Keeping it damp and giving it a dose of watered down yoghurt is about all I can do until things cool off. On the other hand the Irish moss and Scotch moss, which are not really mosses at all are doing very well. I feel a column about moss coming on. That is what happens.....I get the seed of an idea, and it stays in the back of my mind for a while. Then I look up information to see if what I am thinking is accurate, and one day when the mood is right I sit down and write two or three columns. I also work on the next letter of the alphabet for those columns, and K is proving a challenge. On a more personal note, grandaughter Brittany should find out today whether my future new greatgrandbaby is a boy or a girl. Three boys would be a wonderful trio for her, but then a girly girl would be very nice........................................................
