Where To Go In March

March 3, 2010 - Al Stephenson

The Ides of March are upon us and its time to see what sporting event we would like to attend.  In January I chose the NCAA National Football Championsip game.  February had the Daytona 500 on the top of my wish list.  Of course that was without knowing that a pothole controversy would develop!

Remember the rules here.  You may attend one sporting event in the world for the month, but only one.  You have to choose (in this not so reality world) which event you would like to go see - if given the chance.

So now it's March and what choices do you have?   Well if hockey is your thing, the NHL players are back from the Olympics.  I have been to a few college hockey games at Ohio University, but never a pro game.  I might enjoy it, but that would not be my first choice.

Major league baseball is preparing for another season and attending spring training is somewhat appealing to me.  The problem with spring training is that you won't know a lot of the players that are there.  Then again, if you are an Indians fan, you may not know many of the guys once the season starts!

The PGA Tour takes us to Florida.  Doral and Bay Hill are the top draws this month.  Will it make a difference if Tiger is back for Bay Hill?  Not particularly.  Let me play a round with tournament host Arnold Palmer and this event would get serious consideration.

Nascar will hold its spring race at Bristol this month.  I've been to that race and the action at the Bullring is awesome.  Still it is March and one event seems to outshine the others.

It's March Madness, Baby.  I could even listen to Dickie V (with earplugs though) broadcast this event if it meant sitting in on the NCAA basketball Final Four.  This would be a treat no matter who is playing.

The view from my seat suggests basketball on the college level takes the top prize for March.  This year it's in Indianapolis.  Not that far away.  If you have extra tickets let me know and this fantasy game will take on a new meaning!
