The process of producing a weekly column is an interesting one. I am one of those people who has to have things ready ahead of time, and sometimes I go to ridiculous lengths to be sure that everything is in place when I need it. I send in my column to the A-T every Friday for the following week, and I always work one week ahead in case the Muse dries up, or things get even busier than usual around here. But right now I have the next five columns written and proofread, which is a little excessive! Sometimes I get an idea in my head which seems to come fully developed, and I have to get in typed up as soon as possible, before it is gone again. And that happened two or three times in the past week. With the holidays over and the house fairly well cleaned up. my thoughts are on gardening. No surprise there. I ordered all the seeds I need for the vegetable garden last week, and of course wrote a column about the process. I am doing an occasional column with the letters of the alphabet as the theme to feature snippets that are not big enough for a whole column. A and B filled weeks when nothing else sprang to mind, and so I wrote C to have it ready. D is almost complete in my mind as I want to get something written about double-digging, but I have resisted writing that one so far. A few weeks ago I noticed the lavender by the back door is still looking green and healthy through the snow, and so what else....I wrote a column about lavender. And the bones of the garden poking through the snow suggested some writing about winter shapes. And just this morning I started thinking about all the planning that goes into a successful garden space, and bingo! another column was born. That one is forcing me to get some of my ideas for the coming season into shape, another column no doubt!
