HU women v. No. 23 Mount Union updates

January 23, 2010 - Zach Baker

Heidelberg needs a big win. Today would certainly suffice.

During the pregame, as the starters were announced, the Heidelberg players left a circle of teammates, then were greeted by Breeanca Madison, who gave them all a different celebration. Cool.

Shot clock violation on Heidelberg's first possession. Not a good sign.

At the 15:32 mark, it's 6-4 Mount Union. They are finding Betsy Shrider inside, but she always seems to kick it back out and Heidelberg is setting for outside jumpers. That's one constant problem. To win games like this, Shrider has to establish herself as a scoring threat inside. Even if the baskets don't go, it will draw defense.

-It's 10-6 Mount, 13:40 left.

-Stacey Richard has 8 points, and Stacey Barker just connected on a 3. It's an 8-0 run and an 18-15 HU lead (5:30).

-The Raiders are bringing pressure defensively, and it's forcing Heidelberg into some bad decisions on offense. The Princes have four turnovers so far. MUC leads, 15-10, 9:38 left first half.

Mount has answered Heidelberg's run with an 8-0 run of its own. It got an exclamation point after Nicole Plant missed back-to-back free throws, but MUC got the offensive board, threw to Kori Widt, who nailed a 3 (2:53)

-Mount Union goes to the half with a 26-20 edge. Heidelberg's defense played well, but its offense managed only two points over the final five minutes.

- With 13:26 left, Heidelberg trails, 33-27. Mount Union upped its lead to 33-21, but Heidelberg has run off six straight points. (13:09)

Again, Heidelberg's defense is playing well. The offense is inconsistent. Shrider's free throws make it 40-33 with 8:19 left.

Miller just missed back-to-back layups that would have made it a one possession game. Tough day for Jenny offensively. Davault just buries a trey from the right wing. 41-38 (6:13)

Miller's two free throws make it a 41-40 Mount lead. MUC is then turns it over. The Raiders look rattled. (6:04)

Kristen McConkey misses two foul shots that could have given HU the lead. Still 43-41 Mount, 4:42 left, Raiders have the ball.

Richard has been Heidelberg's star today. She just drained a jumper to make it 44-43 MUC at the 3:10 mark. Richard has 15 points and 12 rebounds. Cue the Journey music. It's crunch time.

After a relatively quiet offensive day, Miller hit a big time jumper from the key to make it 46-aa, 2:04 left. Miller has 7 points.

Tessa Pohovey just snared a key offensive board off a miss for the Raiders. With MUC leading 48-46 and 42 seconds left, Miller's rebound off a miss gives HU the ball back. Timeout, HU. 24 seconds on the shot.

-Barker just got the ball around the right wing and went down. She sprained her foot earlier this year. This looks like a left knee injury. She's helped off the court. 36.2 seonds left.

DaVault's jumper sails off, HU forced a turnover. Richard's 3 from the left wing bounces off. That would have won it. Game's over. MUC wins, 48-46.
