Heidelberg women v. Muskingum
January 16, 2010 - Zach Baker
With 15:14 left, Heidelberg trails, 7-6. Betsy Shrider is grabbing rebounds. If she can convert those into points, Heidelberg has a good shot.
Bad sign. It's 11-6 Muskingum and Heidelberg hasn't scored in five minutes. It also has turned the ball over five times. (13:08)
It's 11-8 Muskies at the 10:35 mark. I have Heidelberg for 10 turnovers, and we're not even halfway through the first half.
Heidelberg is playing great defense, and a six-point surge by Jenny Miller has allowed it to build an 18-14 lead (5:36).
Muskingum put up a 9-0 run, and Heidelberg trails 25-22. Amanda Dobbins, who was crucial during the Muskies run, has nine points. (1:10)
With 11:38 remaining, Heidelberg leads, 49-43. The offense is executing better, but it comes with an asterisk of sorts. When things go well, Heidelberg is at times a victim of its own success, and sometimes needs to just slow down on offense, rather than rush. There have been two HU turnovers because the Princes pushed when they didn't need to.
Heidelberg trails at half, 27-25. Over in New Concord, the Heidelberg men trail, 39-36 at the break.
Here's why Heidelberg coach Marcie Alberts should feel good right now: Her team has turned the ball over 14 times, and only trails by 2. Oddly enough, the Student Princes actually have more points off tunovers (12) than the Muskies (9). Muskingum has turned it over 11 times.
Heidelberg leads 41-36 after a Stacey Barker 3 (16:00)
-Through an aggressive defense and an offense that is -- at the moment-- on the upswing, Heidelberg leads Muskingum, 45-39 at the 14:32 mark. Betsy Shrider has 12 points, having just hit a short jumper. That's a good sign for HU.
-Muskingum has battled back from an 8-point deficit, thanks in part to the long-distance shooting of Carissa Bosch. But even more so, Muskingum is out-hustling Heidelberg on the offensive glass right now. It's 52-50 Heidelberg, 7:17.
Stacey Barker just made a key steal; Shrider at the line with a 3-point lead. She misses the front end.
Dobbins is at the line for a one and one with a chance to tie or take the lead (5:03).Dobbins makes both.
Stacey Richard got called for a technical after she got fouled. Dobbins makes both Muskingum throws, then Richard makes her two. 59-58 HU, 4:42.
Heidelberg leads, 64-60, with 1:44 left. Barker just hit another 3, she has 20.
Lyndsey DaVault canned a jumper. 66-60.
Bosch answers with a 3. She has 14. Heidelberg leads, 66-63 with 42 seconds left. Missed free throws will make this harder than it needed to be, at best.
DaVault had three key baskets in the last minute. HU wins, 70-63.
