TU women vs. Northern Michigan
January 7, 2010 - Zach Baker
With 14:34 left in the first half, we're tied at 5. Each team is shooting poorly, a number of the shots not even hitting the rim.
The cold shooting continues on both sides, as Northern Michigan and Tiffin are tied at 8 at the 9:58 mark of the first half. Tiffin's 3 of 13 from the floor, unofficially.
- TU coach Pam Oswald has taken a timeout with a little more than five minutes left, TU leads, 16-14. Good Dragons defense so far.
-There have been a number of high percentage shots missed on each side. The game is tied at 16 with 4:07 left. From the TU side, it seems to have trouble scoring in transition.
-Things are warming up a little here in the opening minutes of the second half, with Northern Michigan opening up a 27-22 lead at the 14:01 mark. Katrina Clark has made back-to-back shots for TU.
We're at halftime, thank goodness. Tiffin shot 6 of 32 in the first half and trails Northern Michigan, 20-16. The Wildcats are shooting a comparably balmy 7 of 31. At least they're better than 20 percent.
What is bothersome is Tiffin missed very makeable shots. The defense forced NMU into six turnovers and was decent, though the Wildcats also missed plenty of easy shots.
Jessica Harris leads TU with 6 points and 6 rebounds. Angie Leckson's 8 points pace NMU.
-With 11:49 left, it's 27-22 Wildcats. TU's offensive struggles have carried over to the second half, and someone needs to find a way to create some points. This is usually where Mandy Jaeb steps in, but NMU has contained her.
Back to back transition baskets by the Wildcats' Kellie Rietveld and Christa Erickson have pushed the edge to 31-22 with 9:25 left.
- I don't want to take away from WMU's defense, which has been very good, but TU's offensive struggles have been an all game thing. It's gone more than five minutes without a point, and trails 33-22.(8:52)
-With seven minutes left, Northern Michigan coach Troy Mattson could be heard saying "we need to run some clock." Pretty much sums it up. Wildcats lead, 38-28 at the 5-minute mark.
-Same score, now with 4:01 left. It would seem just scoring 10 points in four minutes would be a challenge for the Dragons tonight. NMU is content to drain at least 25 seconds a possession.
Two free throws and a Jaeb jumper have cut it to 38-34. (1:36) Dragons are on a 6-0 run. Of note is that TU has three fouls to give. But NMU has gotten two key offensive boards on the last possession. (1:17)
Jessiica Harris' jumper made it 38-36 with less than 40 seconds left. TheDragons fouled, sending Steffani Stoeger to the line. She made her first. 39-36, 32.5 left.
OK, the Wildcats were shooting 1-and-1, up four points. The shooter missed, but the Dragons didn't react, and the ball bounced off Harris and out of bounds. (16.9) The Wildcats had even removed everyone from the foul line.
The Wildcats will win this one.
