Heidelberg women vs. Capital Updates
January 6, 2010 - Zach Baker
With 14:46 left in the first half, Capital, undefeated in the Ohio Athletic Conference, is leading Heidelberg, 9-7. Berg's defense looks really good in the early going, with Jenny Miller and Betsy Shrider pacing it.
-A 3 from Lyndsey DaVault pushes HU to a 10-9 lead. The key here is for Heidelberg to stay close and not feel the need to come back with the 3. It's 12-11 HU at the 12:08 mark.
-With 10:08 left, Heidelberg trails Capital, 13-12. Defense for HU is very good, but the offense is uneven so far.
I have Heidelberg for eight turnovers so far. 17-14 Capital, 8:20
Stacey Richard's free throw ties it at 21 at the 4:32 mark. Abbey Winland's trey on the ensuing Capital possession gives iut a 24-21. It's 26-21 at the 3:18 mark. The next 3 minutes are crucial to Heidelberg staying in this one.
It's 32-26 Capital at the break. Heidelberg is executing on offense and defense about as well as I've seen it all year. The problem, though, is turnovers. The Student Princes have 13 at the break, which is way too much since they usually go through stretches where they have trouble shooting.
Heidelberg is in the game now because Capital has 10 turnovers, but I wouldn't count on that type of ball control in the second half.
Miller has eight points, Stacey Richard has 6. Capital's Kristen Richardson has 13 points on 5 of 6 shooting. She averages a little more than 11 a game.
Both teams come out with intensity, and have gone back and forth in the first five minutes, Heidelberg trails, 37-32.
Chelsey Calhoun's 3 from the right corner has cut the Capital lead to 39-38 at the 12-minute mark. What's nice about tonight is that it hasn't been the Jenny Miller show offensively. Miller has 12, but a number of people are contributing.
Heidelberg's work on the offensive boards is keeping it in this game. It's 39-35 Capital at the 13:10 mark.
-In what could be a key moment, Heidelberg took a 40-39 lead on a Miller basket, but turned the ball over on three consecutive possessions. The Princes haven't scored since. It's 45-40 Capital at the 6:49 mark.
Betsy Shrider just got called for an offensive foul. It looks like Capital is starting to click, and Heidelberg isn't executing like it did early in the half. HU needs to put the breaks on these things fast, or it will be a 15 point game in three minutes.
If my math is right, it's now six turnovers in seven possessions. I hate to speculate, but it almost seems as though the Student Princes lost their edge when they saw how close they were coming to the upset, Heidelberg has now turned the ball over 21 times, and there's 5:31 left. Capital leads, 47-40. HU hasn't scored since the 10:35 mark.
Four straight free throws have brought HU back to within 47-44 at the 4:06 mark. Fasten your seatbelts.
-Richard made a steal but couldn't control the ball along the sideline, and it went back to Capital. It's still 47-44, now with 3:39 left. We'll see how close Heidelberg is in its development in the next few minutes.
DaVault just nailed a straight-away 3 to make it 49-47 with 2:52 left. That five-minute scoring drought Heidelberg went through in the middle portion of this half sure looks crucial now.
Miller had a great look at a jumper that would have tied it, but it rolled off. Richardson followed with a pair of layups. It's 53-47 with 38 seconds left. Starting to look like a Capital win.
