HU-Albion men's basketball blog

November 24, 2009 - Zach Baker

First half

At the 14:47 mark, Albion leads Heidelberg, 10-6. Almost all the scoring for each team has come inside, as Heidelberg has been cold from the outside thus far.

Albion has been able to penetrate inside and score with either free throws or layups, which can't be interpreted as a good sign at this point for HU.

-At the 9:30 mark, it's 18-10 Albion. All I can say is turnovers and cold shooting is a recipe for disaster. Calver drains Heidelberg's first three from the left corner to make it 18-13. The plan has to be to force Heidelberg outside, because it is just not hitting right now.

Andre Bridges has seven points for Albion. Calver has five for HU,

-You can add one more thing Heidelberg is struggling with so far -- free throws. I don't have the numbers yet, but I'm sure the Student Princes have shot close to 10 free throws and made less than half. They trail, 29-19, with 3:15 left in the half.

-It's 37-24 at the half. Heidelberg is 5 of 14 from the free throw line, There are other stats, but you simply can't win surrendering nine points.

-At the 14:20 mark, Albion leads, 51-38.  Heidelberg had a 9-0 run early in the second half to cut the lead to 40-33. The Student Princes look much better here, but it may have too big of a hole to climb from.

-It's 58-50 at the 9:34 mark. Heidelberg keeps battling, getting a sstrong effort from Adrian Casey, who has eight points and has, as much as anyone else, paced Heidelberg's comeback. The pace of the game has picked up, which seems to be favoring Heidelberg. But it will need more of this to close the gap completely. If Heidelberg played like this in the first half, it'd be leading.

Heidelberg trails by 1, 64-63, after a 3 by Calver,a jumper by Kinn and a beautiful stop and go layup by Dane Givner.

At the four-minute mark, Kinn comes on and hit a beautiful jumper off glass to give HU a 69-67 lead. Then Dave Stasiak gets called for an offensive foul.

-Game is tied, 79-all, with 38 seconds left. Chris Hutton's 3 gave Albion the lead, but Calver was fouled taking a 3 on the other end, and made all his throws.

Still tied, .7 seconds on the clock. Kinn made a steal and it will set up a catch and shoot.Calver will inbound. Smalley catches way over on the left side and launches, but the ball falls off the rim. Good look.

We head to OT.

Kinn makes two free throws to give HU an 84-83 lead.

Moments later he scores again, 86-85 HU, 52 seconds.

OK, HU got a defensive stop, then Kinn drained two free throws with 27 seconds left. HU leads, :23

-Stasiak makes a few points that aren't on 3s. Two free throws make Heidelberg's lead 88-87 with 19.6 left. Somebody's getting fouled.

Calver at the line, makes the first, and second.18.4

Heidelberg has made 10 straight foul shots, and leads 94-91 with 1.8 left....missed 3.

HU wins, 94-91
