The *#^*% Yankees
November 6, 2009 - Al Stephenson
The best team money can buy won their 27th World Series Championship this week. I can't believe anyone outside of the Big Apple really cares. Most, like me, were rooting for whoever the blasted Yankees were playing.
I actually have a soft spot for the Phillies as my mother was from West Chester, near Philly. I actually have seen games in three different baseball stadiums in Philadelphia, having been to Connie Mack stadium as a kid. Veterans Stadium and the current Citizens Bank Park has seen my fanny in their seats.
It really didn't matter who was playing however. If it is not the Tribe, I will not be riveted to the screen. I am not likely to really cheer for any other team, but I detest the Yankees.
I'll give them the early pennants. The last few years though, it is hard to stomach them. They have more money than anyone else and can attract the big name free agents. They are not afraid to sign admitted steroid users too, which is another reason to dislike them.
Perhaps the worst thing about this year's edition came from owner George Steinbrenner in a prepared statement. He congratulated the team and suggested that the Yankees won it for the best fans in baseball.
I have been to Yankee Stadium. Yankee fans are - in a word - obnoxious.
The view from my seat (priced out in the new House that Ruth Built) suggests that anyone winning next season would be better than seeing the Damn Yankees win again.
Except maybe for the Red Sox, or Mets, or Tigers or.... GO TRIBE!
