TU-SVSU updates

October 10, 2009 - Zach Baker

First Quarter

- With 7:23 left in the first quarter, there's no score. Tiffin has had a pair of possessions. On its second, Nate Scully was intercepted by the Cardinals' John Jacobs.

-Saginaw Valley is forced to punt for the second time (5:58).

End of the first quarter, still no score, though SVSU is driving. The last possession came courtesy of a Scully fumble. Wayne Sanders hit Scully and Mike LeVand recovered.

Second quarter

Charles Dowdell makes a 14-yard TD completion to Nick Gallina on the first play of the second quarter. 7-0 Cardinals (14:17).

Tiffin drives into SVSU territory, but on a third down, Scully is intecepted for the third time, for the second time by Jacobs. TU has turned the ball over four times so far. Usually, that would mean a blowout, but the Dragons' defense is hanging in there. (7:48)

-A 47-yard pass from Dowdell to Mike Peterson (7-yard pass, 40-yard run) sets up a Brandon Hayes touchdown run. Chris Evans blocks the extra point (4:12) SVSU 13, Tiffin 0.

-At the very least, the Dragons need to hold the score where it is. A score here could end all doubt.

No sooner do I write the sentence than Scully is picked off again, this time by Ja'Vae Ingraham. Four picks, five turnovers. You won't win games doing that, but you do it in the first half... well, there's trouble. (2:53).

-Saginaw Valley's Xavier Walker fumbles the ball into the end zone, and the Dragons recover.... but the officials huddle and rule Walker was down. As TU coaches in the box above me start re-arranging furniture, Walker plows in for a TD. 20-0, SVSU (2:19).

-50-yard completion  from Scully to Singleton sets up the Dragons inside the Cardinal 10. On fourth and goal from the 2 with time running out in the half, Scully runs a playaction and soft-tosses the ball to Trey Williams in the left side of the end zone.

Gutsy call, but a good one by coach Dave  Walkosky. Time expires on the half and TU goes in down, 20-7.

Third quarter

I spent the first half of the period on the TU sideline. TU's Arthur Allen picks off a Dowdell pass, which sets up a Scully-to-Dave Singleton seven-yard TD completion. TU's sideline goes crazy, having cut SVSU's edge to 20-14.

The opportunity for a defensive stop comes on a third and 16 from SVSU's 38. Andrew Beaver makes a 24-yard completion to keep the Cardinal offense on the field. Shortly after, Dowdell hits a wide open Gallina for a touchdown. (5:08).

SVSU 26, Tiffin 14.

Scully fumbles on the next possession, Toby Gates recovers and returns to TU's 17. Six TU turnovers (4:24).

-Austin Borchard' 37-yard  field goal attempt is low and wide right. (3:53).

Fourth Quarter

-Xavier Walker scores on a four-yard TD run. (13:36)

TU punter Boris Bede saves TU some points. The snap goes behind him, he picks up the ball in the end zone and somehow gets off a punt through the rush to midfield. Wild.
