More from T.J. Shouse interview

August 15, 2009 - Zach Baker

More from my interview with Tiffin volleyball coach T.J. Shouse:

"I think one of the biggest changes for our program, or the biggest benefit, for the first time I'll have a full-time assistant coach with me. My assistant, Jill Howard, comes from Marietta College where she coached the last two years; she played at Hiram College when they were at their pinnacle.”

“We set up a trip for next year to Italy. Next spring break, the kids are gonna go overseas to Italy. It's going to be our entire spring break. It's something a fair amount of Division II teams do, but I think, we get a lot of kids in the regional area. A lot of kids from Michigan and Ohio; a lot of kids from small schools. A trip like this is something they may never get a chance to do, and I think it's a great opportunity to expand the team brand a little bit, going overseas, and being able to compete with some teams and see some great sites.”

“As the core of our team gets a little bit older — we only have one senior this year, we have about five juniors — those guys are gonna be leaned upon to kind of direct the program from this point out.”

“This year I have a lot higher expectations, mainly because a good group is coming back. They're experienced, they've been playing and they need to lead this program in a direction where it's gonna be a constant improvement from year to year. Kids like Brooke, Brittany Teaford, Jess Adams, Nikki Cranick, those kids are going to need to be able to perform on the court, but they need to also help establish what our program is about.”

“We proved that we could play with people. I honestly think a lot of people were surprised that we did get to conference wins. I think people believed we would just get beat every time we stepped on the floor.”
