Heidelberg men v. Muskingum

February 21, 2009 - Zach Baker

With 11:35 left in the first half, Heidelberg trails Muskingum, 14-13.It's been physical thus far, with each team getting to the foul line three times.

-Muskingum has developed a 23-17 lead by establishing an inside presence offensively. At the same time, Heidelberg's offense has cooled off a bit. 7:45 remains in the first half.

Something of a sluggish first half for Heidelberg. It trails the Muskies, 36-25. It shot just 7 of 22 from the floor in the first half. Meanwhile, the Muskies, led by Tyler Felt's 13 points and four boards. are 12 of 23 from the floor and 11 of 11 from the foul line.

Jake Hessey's seven points lead Heidelberg, in Hessey's final game at Seiberling Gymnasium.

-Heidelberg trails 40-29 with 16:52 remaining. Heidelberg has one major advantage. Muskingum has five fouls, Heidelberg 1.

Update in wrestling: Heidelberg has advanced seven wrestlers to the finals in the the OAC tournament.

A three-point play, followed by a straight away triple by Trevor Scott has jumped Muskingum's lead back up to 10 at the 11-minute mark. Heidelberg coach Anthony Gholson (who's wearing a kicking orange suit today) has put in some youth, and it paid off for a time. Still, guys like Quintin Aden have yet to develop the confidence to take an open 3. Twice Aden was open, and he hesitated and kicked it away. Muskingum has upped its lead to 14, 52-38, with 10 minutes remaining.

-A pair of free throws by Kinn and a four-point play by Hessey have cut the deficit to 58-50 with 6:48 left. Make that 58-53 after a John Miller trey.

-Jim Smalley's 3 has cut the Muskingum lead to 58-56 with 3:51 remaining. And THAT's the run one has been looking for.

-Muskingum missed four free throws early in the second half, but otherwise has been solid. Muskingum leads, 63-60, after a pair of Kinn foul shots. 2:26 left. Offensive foul gives the ball back to Heidelberg. Here we go. Aden hits a floater (sorry about that confidence remark, Quintin), and it's 63-62 with 2:01 on the clock.

Aden steals the ball. If I didn't know any better. Kinn hits a layup and a three-point play. With 1:02 left, Heidelberg leads, 65-63. Pat Byrne at the line makes his first for Muskingum, and makes his second. Tie game.

Hessey had an open look at a 3 from the left corner, but it bounced off the rim. 37.8 left. Muskingum has the ball.

A missed shot, but Scott rebounded and laid it back in. At the other end, Kinn tried to tie it, but his shot didn't hit anything. Kinn tried to call timeout as he was going out of bounds, but didn't get it. Muskingum ball. 6 seconds left. Inbounded to Scott, he's fouled. Two foul shots. Make 'em both and its over.

First is good. Second good.

Calver drains a 3. 1,3 left and Muskingum gets two foul shots.Cory Bourquin makes both free throws. Hessey's heavy from halfcourt hits the glass, rim, and falls off.

71-68 final.
