Berg men vs. B-W
February 4, 2009 - Zach Baker
So here it is, the first game for Duane Sheldon in Seiberling Gymnasium after leaving to coach Baldwin-Wallace. I'd like to say it looks weird seeing Sheldon on the other sideline, but that's not the case.
When Sheldon coached at Heidelberg, he had his team stationed near the open end of the gym. New HU coach Anthony Gholson has his team at the closed end. So Sheldon is actually on the same sideline as last year.
These are the sorts of interesting facts you don't get anywhere else.
-With about 11 minutes left, Berg leads, 13-12. B-W is missing a number of open shots. Jim Smalley just drained a right corner trey. 16-12 HU.
-With 8:23 left, B-W has tied the game after a driving layup by Dennis Santiago. HU's Ryan Treese ties the game at 20 on a jumper from the right side, then a Smalley jumper from the left gives Heidelberg the lead.
-I just caught Josh Calver's inbound pass. Sadly, I'm in the third row, so it's a turnover. At least the ball missed my laptop by taking a true bounce.
-Berg and B-W are tied at 22 with 4:09 left. Derrick Flynn's pretty jumper from inside the key gives HU a 24-22 lead, as we crawl inside three minutes in the first half.
-Flynn gets inside to put Berg up 26-23 with 1:30 left.
-Heidelberg just fouled for the 11th time in the half, which allowed Promis Cabbil to hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 26.
Flynn's layup with three seconds left gives HU a 28-26 lead at the half.
B-W was called for just four fouls in the half.
-Flynn leads Heidelberg with six points at the break. Kyle Tuley has six boards for HU, while John Miller has four assists.
Santiago and Andrew Bene have six points each to lead B-W. Bene also has six boards.
-With 15:31 left, B-W has pulled ahead, 36-32. Berg has had a few turnovers and missed shots. A Calver jumper cuts the lead to two. Bene, who is 6-6, has a height advantage on HU's Travis Kinn, and right now B-W is scoring in the post.
As Flynn is called for his fourth foul, Kevin Gall extends the B-W lead to six with a free throw, then the Yellow Jackets get a rebound and teammate Ben Dobberstein is at the line. He splits, and its 44-37 B-W. Following that, HU's Cory Timbs throws the ball away.
Heidelberg looks like its in a tough spot right now. It needs to be able to keep B-W. out of the paint.
Ryan Treese hits a layup, then Kins scores a layup and is fouled. Sheldon is screaming for a timeout, and gets one with 11:00 left. 46-42, B-W. Sheldon really didn't like the last foul call. Well, at least we know he hasn't changed much. Intense as ever.
Kinn and Tuley are starting to click on offense. After a Quintin Aden steal, Kin forces himself inside and gets fould. A pair of foul shots later, and it's a one-point game.
After Tuley splits a pair of free throws with 9:07 left, it's 50-48, B-W
-A Smalley try from the right corner ties the game at 56. Gholson takes a timeout. On another topic, Tuley is playing about as well as I have seen him. He's jumping around for boards, meaning Kinn isn't forced to do the bulk of the boarding.
-Josh Calver's left wing 3 has put Berg up, 65-60 at the 4:14 mark. Calver, Smalley, John Miller and Jake Hessey have all hit big 3's here in the second half.
Santiago and Bene hit back-to-back layups, but Kinn followed with a pair of fouls shots, Berg has the ball at the 2:20 mark and a 67-64 lead,
Jake Hessey's shot is short, and B-W rebounds. Sheldon calls time with 2:00 left.
Stat to watch: Heidelberg SID Morgan Hawley tells me Berg has eight 3's, B-W none.
Santiago's tying 3 attempt is off to the right, but Bene boards and draws the foul. With 1:35 left, Bene splits, but B-W gets a huge offensive board. It's 67-65 at 1:30. B-W's ball. Thirty-three seconds on the shot clock.
Bene's shot misses, Kinn rebounds. Tuley gets the ball under the basket, puts it up and in and is fouled with under a minute left. Foul shot is good. Bene puts it in with 37 seconds left. Smalley's now at the line with 27 seconds left and a 3-point lead. Smalley gets both.
Bene scores again with 14 seconds left. A technical foul is called on the B-W bench. That means four free throws, Calver and Hessey do their part. Game's over.
Heidelberg has been dynamite from the foul line. Berg wins, 77-.71. It sweeps B-W.
