Woodman, spare that tree!

November 6, 2008 - Janet DelTurco
Well, we certainly did not spare that tree. My grandaughter's husband, Tom, came over this afternoon to help me to trim off some dead branches from the redbud and the forsythia which form a hedge along the street side of the vegetable garden. We both started trimming, the only difference between us being that Tom had a saw, loppers and a sledgehammer and axe head, while I waved my pruners rather ineffectually. The redbud was fairly easy, for me at any rate as I mostly watched, then we tackled the forsythia. What a tangled mess. And with about half of the leaves down, it was hard to see what was dead. The more we hacked away the worse it got. I should have taken pictures. Finally, of course, the inevitable. One crooked branch after another, down it all came. And now I have an enormous pile of brush and an empty space. Patrick will be over tomorrow after school, and we will make the first of several journeys to the brush pile with our "stuff". And for a very rare moment I have a space to fill, even though it has a raggedy mess of stumps in the middle. There is an opportunity that doesn't come along very often for me with the crowded conditions here, and I will make the best use of it.
