Heidelberg v. Ohio Northern updates
October 11, 2008 - Zach Baker
How packed is the press box today? I'm on the other side than usual and Heidelberg sports information director Morgan Hawley is sitting behind the reporters/announcers. Lots of people here.
-ONU receives and gets a few first downs but eventually punts. Heidelberg takes over at the 17.
-Third and 10, quarterback Andrew Miller is sacked for a 2-yard loss. Miller was sacked 10 times last week. Heidelberg punts; ONU takes over at its own 45. (10:14)
-On the first play of the ensuing drive, ONU QB Max Rotheker finds Michael Busch down the sidelines. Well, he would have had Heidelberg Wayne Linum not tackled him. Pass interference and ONU drives on, all the way to the 10. A completion to Dustin Woods takes the ball to the goal line. Brent Donley plows in after that. Kick is good (8:21)
Ohio Norhern 7, Heidelberg 0
Update from University Center, Mich.: Saginaw Valley State 33, Tiffin 0 in the third quarter.
- Miller makes a pair of completions, moving the Student Princes past midfield. Miller throws the ball right to Chane Porter -- who, sadly for Miller, is a defensive back. But Porter drops the ball. Otherwise, it'd be 14-0. On third down, Miller goes to Preston down the right sideline to Preston. Pass interference takes it to the ONU 35.
Miller is sacked for the second time, setting up a third and 13. Miller screens to Dawond Roddy for 17 yards and a first down. Wonderful call. (3:59)
On first down, Miller steps up in the pocket and throws a strike to Preston in the end zone. Preston can't hang on. Incomplete on a third and long sets up a fourth and eight from the 21. Jesse Hawkins is hurt, so 'Berg goes. Miller runs right and finds Bauer, who is tackled just short of the first down at the 13. (2:51)
Update from University Center, Mich: Saginaw Valley State 33, Tiffin 0, late in third quarter.
ONU drives the ensuing possession to the ONU 41. First and 10. ONU seems to have found something that works -- Donley. It's so effective that Heidelberg bites on a play action and Brook Crawford brings down a long pass at the two. Donley goes in a play later. (13:16)
ONU 14, Heidelberg 0
-Heidelberg, facing a third and two at its own 41, gets a tough run from Jemar Lewis for a first down. A holding call on Mitch White stalls the drive. On a second and long, Miller goes deep for Roddy, but the ball is picked by ONU's Jesse Richards at the ONU 22. (10:25)
- ONU goes three and out. (9:28)
-Bauer returns the punt past Heidelberg's 40. He's taken down with a face mask, so add 15.
On a third and nine from the ONU 42, Miller throws a hanging pass to the right corner. The Polar Bears Justin Henck intercepts it and returns it to the Heidelberg 30 (7:57).
Update: Saginaw Valley State 33, Tiffin 14 in fourth quarter.
Kyle McNulty's 29-yard field goal goes wide left (5:37)
- Heidelberg is playing better than last week, but one problem still persists. Miller hasn't had much time to throw the ball. He has been sacked twice, but the pressure from ONU is such that Miller is rushing his throws. He has to.
- A third-down completion moves the ball to the 36. First down. Two plays later and it's third and 14. I think ONU will bring thr pressure. It does, but Miller evades it and throws to Greg Tyson for nine. But it's short of the first down and means a punt. (2:35)
- Err, check that. Polar Bears offsides on the punt. First down Heidelberg. The Student Princes will need to get something out of this now.
A few runs to Lewis moves Heidelberg into ONU territory. Third and 3 with 1:31 left. Miller finds Bauer for a first down at the 40.
A bad exchange results in a fumble and an ONU recovery (1:04). That's the third turnover of the half.
-ONU's Kenton Sneed takes a handoff past midfield, and ONU is at the 37 facing a third down (:43) ONU has one timeout left.
ONU moves the ball to the 27 with 12 seconds left. A long completion to the two with five seconds left allows one more play. ONU has already missed a field goal from 29 yards, so ONU is going, spread out. Crawford catches a touchdown as time expires in the first half. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.
End of first half
ONU 21, Heidelberg 0
Here's the true test for Heidelberg: I have ESPN's scores up on my screen, and announcers on each side of me are watching the progression of the Toledo-Michigan game. Toledo's leading 13-10. So it's up to Heidelberg to get these announcers to not look at my screen and keep the focus on the field.
Start of third quarter
And on the first play from scrimmage in the second half, Lewis fumbles and ONU recovers. Four turnovers. Not looking good. (14:40)
-ONU's Rothaker throws the ball to Crawford, who makes a circus catch at the 15. On a first and goal from the two.
Rothaker options in for a TD (12:58)
ONU 28, Heidelberg 0
-Miller throws a 40-yard-plus completion to Roddy, down to the 21. Here's a scoring chance. Third and five from the 16. Incomplete pass. Now it's fourth down. Another incompletion to Roddy (10:53).
-An injury to a Heidelberg player, looks to be Xavier Purnell. He's down for a while and stretchered off. But he's giving a thumbs up to the crowd. He also pumped up his teammates on the way off the field. Hope he's OK.
-Meanwhile, as ONU punts, the public address annoucer lets the fans know that Toledo has beaten Michigan, 13-10. That gets the biggest cheer of the day from the Heidelberg crowd. (8:39)
-Heidelberg goes three and out. The teams then exchange punts as the third quarter stretches towards its conclusion. Heidelberg opts to go for it after moving the ball to its 48. Timeout, Heidelberg. (:12)
Final Score: Saginaw Valley State 33, ONU 14.
- Miller runs and is stopped short of the first down.
End of third quarter
ONU 28, Heidelberg 0
Start of fourth quarter
ONU is forced to punt. Here's the thing: Heidelberg's defense is doing what it can, but the turnovers have hampered its ability to keep it competitive. (12:55)
-On the following possession, Miller is sacked three times, including once on a fourth and 12 from the Heidelberg 42. (10:04).
-Moments later, Donley runs in his third touchdown of the game, this time from 27 yards. (9:40).
-Dawond Roddy takes a big hit oon the ensuing kick return. Roddy runs every play like his life depends on it. He's fun to watch play, even when the team is struggling. Miller is intercepted by Porter. (8:14) Five turnovers.
