Heidelberg v. Otterbein updates

October 4, 2008 - Zach Baker

A quick note before we start. In my preview story which ran today, I indicated in the headline that this was Heidelberg's Homecoming game. It is not. That comes next week against Ohio Northern. I regret the error.

First Quarter

For this game, I opted to watch Heidelberg's first offensive drive from the sideline. It's a way to get an early feel for the game, and I thought it'd be a good idea.

At least it was, until Heidelberg kick returner Adrian Balser returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, running right by me on the left sideline.

Heidelberg 7, Otterbein 0

Then, Otterbein quarterback Jack Rafferty led the Cardinals on a touchdown drive of its own. Rafferty punched it in himself from the two, tying the game.

Heidelberg 7, Otterbein 7

Heidelberg took the ensuing kickoff into Otterbein territory, but was forced to punt. Otterbein followed with a drive that started at the 12 and went deep into Heidelberg territory. But the Princes stiffened, forcing a field goal from B.J. Wanninger.

Otterbein 10, Heidelberg 7.

Heidelberg was forced to punt on its next possession. (1:56)

 - It's early, but so far Heidelberg hasn't been able to stop Rafferty. A halfback pass to Ryan Rowley goes for long, long yardage. Colton Coy follows that with a 33-yard TD run.

Right now, Heidelberg's offense needs to find a way to string together some first downs and keep its defense off the field. It has to be gassed. (:07)

Otterbein 17, Heidelberg 7

A personal foul oh Heidelberg allows Otterbein to kick from its 45. Heidelberg takes over on its 16. End of the quarter.

Second Quarter

Heidelberg picks up a first down on the next drive, but a personal foul on Mike Preston moves Heidelberg back. If that's not bad enough, Balser fumbles, Otterbein recovers. Another personal foul on Heidelberg. Eric Yates cashes it in with another TD. Suddenly, it's 24-7 with 11:55 left in the half.

This is getting really ugly, really fast. We're talking Bruiser Brody- ugly here.

-Heidelberg does string together some first downs, but an Andrew Miller intentional grounding causes a loss and a third and forever. Miller gets sacked, and Heidelberg has to punt again. (9:54)

- Otterbein came to play tonight, but Heidelberg hasn't helped itself with turnovers and penalties. Otterbein  gets the ball at its own 40, and Yates breaks off another long run, going for 20 yards. (8:55)

A few plays and its first and goal from the eight. Make it first and four after an offsides call. Oh, wait. Back five yards on a false start. Oh, this is fun.

Yates breaks through to the one on a rush. The pile has been moving one way all night. A one-yard TD run by Yates makes it 31-7. (6:36)

For a night, the 2006 Student Princes have returned.

- Heidelberg's offense puts together a drive thanks to a completion to Lucas Bauer and a pass interference penalty. The ball sits at the Cardinal 41. (5:11)

Miller gets sacked, setting up a third and 14. Then he gets brought down at the line of scrimmage. Here comes the punt team. Cory Hartfield puts the ball down inside the 7. (2:55)

-Otterbein goes three and out, but drains the clock down to 1:03 in the process. Maybe the Student Princes can turn another kick into a TD. The punt is downed at Heidelberg's 49. (:53)

- Miller steps out of the pocket and finds Lucas Bauer, who runs to the 31. Then he hits Dawond Roddy to the 20, but another personal foul, this one on Heidelberg's Nathan Kater, moves the ball back. WTTF announcer Buck Buchanan says it's a "broken record" and he's right. (:25)

Third and 2 at the 28, and Miller hits Greg Tyson in the chest,  but the pass falls incomplete. On fourth down, Miller finds Roddy over the middle to the 10. :10

-With five seconds left, the offense stays on the field for a second and goal. Miller's desperation pass goes makes contact with Preston's hands, but it falls incomplete as time expires.

 End of first half

Otterbein 31, Heidelberg 7

Start of third quarter

-The half changes, but so far the Cardinals are still in command offensively. Colton Coy and Eric Yates have combined to give Heidelberg all kinds of trouble with the running game. When Rafferty passes, he usually has plenty of time.  (11:00)

Otterbein is facing a fourth and seven from the Heidelberg 29. The Cardinals are going, and Rafferty hits Coy down the left sideline to the 13. (10:39)

Coy takes a draw and goes 10 yards for another TD. Otterbein is doing to Heidelberg what it has done to every one of its opponents this season. (9:37)

Otterbein 38, Heidelberg 7

 - Heidelberg's Miller is hit while trying to pass and fumbles. Otterbein's Mike King picks it up and takes it to the Heidelberg five. (9:07)

- Rafferty throws to Brady Collins for a five-yard TD. (8:27)

Otterbein 45, Heidelberg 7

How many more games like this until Otterbein cracks the top 25 in Division III?

-Finally, Heidelberg's offense puts points on the board, when Miller hits Roddy, who fakes out a defender and finds the end zone.

Otterbein 45, Heidelberg 14

-Otterbein is driving again. (1:38)

Yates scores from eight yards out. (:30)

Otterbein 52, Heidelberg 14

End of the third quarter

Otterbein 52, Heidelberg 14

 Fourth Quarter

-Heidelberg is driving with 6:35 left.
