The Best Weekend of the Year
May 23, 2014 - Al Stephenson
It starts today. For sports enthusiasts Memorial Day weekend is the best of the year - by far. For me it starts in a couple of hours as I plan on playing a round of golf with my buddies. Today will be a triple header of sorts and with a little extra time, it could involve four or more sporting events. Here is what's on tap for the coming days.
I am going to spend my late afternoon at Columbian Stadium watching the Division I district track meet. I could opt for softball. You have to be impressed with the final season of M.A.L. softball. No fewer than 5 teams from the disbanding conference will play in district final competition. Calvert, Carey, Lakota, New Riegel, and Seneca East will be in action. Except for a couple of seeing eye ground ball hits, regular season champ Mohawk would make it six teams. I wonder how many other conferences across the state can match those numbers. I hate to see the M.A.L. come to an end, but who knows - maybe it will resurface somewhere down the road.
After the track meet I will watch the Tribe on TV completing my sports triple header. How about the Indians in the last four days. Three extra inning affairs including 13-inning games the last two days. Four consecutive wins gives us hope and certainly some great TV watching.
My wife informed me that we will be washing the deck on Saturday, but that won't take all day. There will be time for sports and again the choices abound. Sunday is the greatest auto racing day of the year. The Indy 500 will be followed by the Coca Cola 600. Yes, I will be glued to the TV set.
The weekend will conclude with a family cookout on Monday. All in all it will be a great time as Mother Nature looks like she will provide some outstanding weather.
The view from my seat suggests that all the sports activity will be great, but we must not forget the purpose of Memorial Day. We set aside that day to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice so that we can enjoy the freedoms that we hold so dear.
If you see a veteran or current member of the military, take a moment to say those simple but significant words as I will do here.
Thank you for your service.
