Park & Rec dismissal came as shock

March 10, 2014 - Rob Weaver
The A-T news staff has been battered a bit lately on Facebook and blog posts for reporting that Steve Dryfuse was dismissed as director of Tiffin Park and Recreation Department. I'll take this opportunity to clarify a few things.

First, a staff member had been asked about the firing by someone who had thought the information to be incredulous. I and others in the newsroom at the time also were shocked at the revelation. The editorial department has had a great working relationship with Steve and everyone else with Tiffin Park and Rec. To find out he had been shown the door was wholly unexpected.

That's why a reporter started making calls. Was his position eliminated? Was there some disagreement between the director and the administration? Could someone make sense of this?

No one contacted would do more than confirm he had been dismissed. At that point, we had a choice to make. One option was to publish what little information we had. The other was to sit on the information until a new director is hired or until we publish as story referring to the interim director -- whichever happened first.

We realized this was public information. Plus, sooner rather than later, someone would notice -- as we did -- the absence of Steve's name and picture on the department website.

We appreciate Steve's service as well as the dedication and enthusiasm he and his staff exhibited. The departure likely will be a topic for the park & rec board to discuss at its regular meeting Thursday. But for now, the dismissal remains a mystery.

I do not know "hardin", but I wholly agree that the passivity of the newspaper is disgusting. The A-T offered an initial article that offered a negative perception of Mr. Dryfuse, and then, left him hanging in the wind.

Clamming up really insulates public officials who are being paid with taxpayer dollars. Tiffinites need to know what's going on with their government and should demand to have access to this kind of information. As a newspaper editor your passivity only serves to enhance 'cover' for city officials. It makes you wonder what else they are up to behind closed doors.
