And so it begins

January 11, 2014 - Nick Dutro
Sorry for the delay, I’ll go ahead and blame it on the snow.

I’m finding that lately I’ve been writing a lot about endings. Partially, it’s because when I started this blog it was well into the end of that year. But too, last year also marked the end for some things I loved, most notably Matt Smith’s run as the title character of “Doctor Who” and the completion of “Young Avengers,” which I dubbed my favorite comic book of last year. It too marked the long, drawn out end for ABC’s “Happy Endings,” that featured a criminally short lifespan.

It’s been hard to say goodbye. Matt Smith is in many ways “My Doctor,” because it was with him that I first started watching the series. It was well-documented months ago that I would have to bid farewell to “Young Avengers,” and even though it’s the second time the series has come to an end, it’s no easier this time around. And even with the writing on the wall, “Happy Endings” was a tough loss.

Also, and maybe most important, this was my last full year that I was single.

Maybe it’s a good thing that 2013 has come to a close. It was a year in which I became ever more frustrated with my leaders, failed to grow a taste for new music, said goodbye to friends and influences and started to feel old. Then again, last year I saw some good movies and read great books, attended some wonderful events, laughed with friends, made memories and fell even more in love than I thought I ever could.

Perhaps, though, I’m dwelling too much on the past. (Not that it’s something I do -- I’ve often been told my nostalgia for college has tainted my actual memories of it.) Because where one Doctor leaves, another will take his place. Where one comic series ends, another will surely crop up. Each cancellation makes room for a new comedy. And with the change in calendar, I’ll start to see mail addressed to “Mr. and Mrs. Dutro,” to which I admit I’m very excited.

With this, my first blog of 2014, I say here’s to a new year and all of the uncertainty that it involves. This is going to be one of the most important years of my life, and I can’t wait for what’s coming.
