Tribe Says Goodbye to Chris Perez
October 31, 2013 - Al Stephenson
The Cleveland Indians released closer (technically ex-closer) Chris Perez today. The Tribe decided he did not fit in their plans for next season. Most Indian fans will be happy with this move and you can include me.
Perez was good on occasion and brutal in others. You could argue that that is the case with all closers and you would be right. For me, the decision was more about clubhouse togetherness than actual pitching results. Perez was the exception on a team that was very close knit. That togetherness is important, even on the professional level.
The Tribe has also resigned Jason Giambi, albeit to a minor league deal in case he opts for retirement and a coaching job in someone's dugout. Giambi is given a lot of credit for instilling that cohesiveness in the clubhouse.
The view from my seat suggests that I like both moves. I'll like them even more if a Cody Allen or someone else takes over the closer role and performs admirably.
