What Did We Do?
March 17, 2013 - Al Stephenson
Yesterday was a wonderful day for the couch potato sports enthusiast. From basketball, to golf, to auto racing I planted my keester on the sofa and spent the entire day watching TV. The day did make me wonder if the remote control should be on the short list of mankind's greatest inventions.
Seriously, what did we do before the days of the remote contol? Unfortunately I am old enough to recall those days. Actually I can recall watching black and white TV's. One of my most vivid childhood memories involved my mother asking me to change the dial on the TV because, as she pointed out, I was younger than her. The fact that I would never be able to change that fact meant that I was always going to be the one to hop off the couch and reach for that knob. If there was any consolation to this situation it was the fact that there were only three channels to choose from. I was not going to have to spend a lot of time searching for the right program.
So as I watched some one hundred different programs yesterday, I marvelled at what is the remote control. I went from college basketball conference tournament action to high school state tourney competition. I watched semifinal or final games in the ACC, Big Ten, Big East, Big 12, Mountain West, SEC, Atlantic 10, MAC, and some other more obscure conferences. I switched to the OHSAA girls basketball state championships, watching Anna and Ft. Loramie win titles.
When I thought I'd had my fill of basketball for the moment, I turned to PGA and LPGA golf. I worked in the Nationwide race from Bristol as Kyle Busch and Kyle Larson provided a door handle to door handle photo finish. The day was awesome and I didn't have to move from the couch to take it all in.
Oh I did get up a couple of times. Once I went into another room where I found my wife watching an old movie called The Creature From the Black Lagoon. Near her was a copy of the TV tab and a very much undisturbed remote control. Sometimes I don't understand her. Why she looks up what's on when she could be finding out with a flick of her thumb is beyond me. She even suggested that a channel could be watched continuously for a couple of hours or more. Who knew?
For those of you who think I watched nothing but sports - shame on you. My interests are much greater than that. I took in several reruns of Two and a Half Men as well as the Big Bang Theory, not to mention that I watched the last ten minutes of the movie!
The view from my seat suggests that the remote control is a wonderful invention. Having several stations to choose from is pretty cool too. The only problem is now it's Sunday. What will I do today?
If you guessed the same as yesterday, you are correct. The Sprint Cup race, more basketball, the final round of golf all followed by the setting of the brackets for March Madness... Here's hoping the batteries for the remote don't give out!
