Ol' Doc's Football Forecast Week 5

September 28, 2012 - Al Stephenson
It was back to my winning ways last week as I correctly predicted Florida State to beat Clemson and Navy to topple VMI. Only a lackluster performance by the Michigan Wolverines kept me from being perfect. Though I am 7-5 for the season, the perfect weekend has still eluded me. Hopefully you are not betting a lot of money on my picks because they are not made with a lot of serious thought. Seriously, picking Florida State to handle Clemson because Jimbo should beat Dabo in a "what kind of name is that" contest is not all that scientific.

Ol' Doc just can't help himself though. With some minimal planning, here's this week's games. I feel good that I will get all three right this time around. Then again - I'm not filling my schedule with cupcakes.

#6 South Carolina at Kentucky. I just spent the last four days in Lexington and I can tell you that no one is all that hyped up about the Wildcats chances this weekend. Seems like all they want to talk about is basketball in the Bluegrass state.

Speaking of a "what kind of name is that" contest, how about UK's coach. Joker Phillips is a great name, but his job is in jeopardy as many rabid Kentucky fans want a big name coach. They are even speaking about Bobby Petrino in Lexington. Hey if you can bring in a John Calipari for the hoops job, then Petrino just might end up back in Kentucky.

As for this game. Not close. Too much Marcus Lattimore and Connor Shaw. Gamecocks go 5-0 for the first time since Lou Holtz roamed the sidelines.

South Carolina 49 Kentucky 10.

#25 Baylor at #9 West Virginia. RG III is gone to the NFL leaving Baylor fans to their memories of last season. The next Heisman winner might be toiling in Morgantown. Quarterback Geno Smith is putting up numbers that will get the attention of Heisman voters. One thing is sure about this contest. The air will be filled with footballs and the game will be a shootout. I like the Mountaineers at home.

West Virginia 45 Baylor 42.

#14 Ohio State at #20 Michigan State. The easy part of the schedule is over for the Buckeyes. It's Big Ten play now and the defense better be able to stop Le'Veon Bell. It will be his rushing against the throwing and running of Braxton Miller. I'm giving the nod to Miller and the Bucks for no other reason that I would like to see OSU win. Hey Ol'Doc is a fan!

Ohio State 24 Michigan State 17.

The view from my seat suggests that Urban Meyer is going to lose a couple of games this year. If this is the first one, then it may be more than a couple.
