Ol' Doc Stephenson's Football Forecast Week 4
September 20, 2012 - Al Stephenson
Ol'Doc got back on the winning track in Week 3 though I'm still waiting to hit all three games. I correctly predicted Toledo's win over Bowling Green though the point projections never materialized. I also picked Notre Dame to upset Michigan State. The Irish are on the schedule again this week as they host Michigan. Sterling Marlin's support of Tennessee wasn't enough to help them against the Gators of Florida. Who would have guessed that?
I now sit 5-4 for the season and this week I will be much more scientific in my prognostications. OK, maybe not.
#10 Clemson at #4 Florida State. A matchup of top ten teams highlight this week's slate and neither one is from the SEC. These two teams played a 35-30 game last season and a typically high scoring affair should take place this weekend. My pick is the Seminoles for two reasons. 1 - they are at home. 2 - With two of the best first names in the coaching ranks Jimbo edges out Dabo.
Florida State 41 Clemson 28.
#18 Michigan at #11 Notre Dame. Notre Dame appears to be back to prominence. Michigan is in the Big 10 and the conference is not very impressive out of the gate in 2012. The game is in South Bend. Easy pick except for the fact that I'm sensing another upset.
Michigan 34 Notre Dame 31.
VMI at Navy. Bonus points if you know the nickname for the Virginia Military Institute. That would be the Keydets. Yeah, I don't know what that means either. Here's the season stats so far. Navy gets lambasted by Notre Dame in Dublin 50-10. The Midshipmen then roll over against Penn State 34-7. This is not going to be a banner season for Navy.
Then again they are not going up against the best team in the nation. VMI loses to Delaware State 17-10 and Richmond 47-6. Their only win is against - drumroll please - Chowan 24-17. If you can't beat Chowan by more than a touchdown, you can't beat Navy.
Navy 27. VMI 17.
The view from my seat suggests that Ol' Doc has to go 3 for 3 some week. Don't you think?
