GLIAC quarterfinals liveblog: TU women vs. Hillsdale

February 29, 2012 - Zach Baker
As cryptic beginnings go, Tiffin certainly had one in the early going tonight. The Dragons turned the ball over on their first three possessions, and fell behind 6-0 on transition buckets.

But TU appears to have weathered the storm. Gilliland has started hot, and Mandy Jaeb is off to a great start. After Jaeb swishes three free throws, TU leads 15-13 with 14:48 left.

Hillsdale leads 19-17 with 11:49 left. A this point I can't say TU is playing badly, just that Hillsdale is playing better. Jessica Harris, who has been on a roll of late, just picked up her second foul. Hillsdale's length appears to be giving TU problems, as it did the last time the teams played. Harris on the bench won't help that for TU. Tied at 21, 9 minutes left.

Coach Pam Oswald is something less than thrilled with the defense so far. Dragons trail 29-25 at the 4:03 mark. It's just that Hillsdale is getting a lot of offensive boards. Karli Mast breaks out of an early shooting slump with a 3 from the right side, and Tiffin is down one. Then Harris rebounds a Hillsdale stickback and goes to the line with 2:20 left. Harris makes the first to tie the contest at 29. Second is good. TU leads 30-29. Another stop and 3 on the right side by Gilliland, and then Harris buries a jumper. She has 10, TU up six, under a minute left.

At the half, TU leads 35-31. I've written this a couple of time, but Jess Harris is playing out of her mind, with 10 points and seven rebounds. And yet, that's how she has been playing for the last month.

Jaeb has nine rebounds, but TU has been sparked by Melissa Gilliland off the bench. She has seven points.

Hillsdale is led by Katie Bildner, who has seven points. Most interesting stat? Teams are each 13 of 28 from the floor. TU leads because it has hit more free throws and one more 3-pointer.

Keys to second half? TU needs to maintain the defensive intensity it had the last three minutes. Hillsdale was scoring, practically at will, in the paint there for a while. If Karli Mast, who has five, can get going in the second half, that'd be good for TU.

For Hillsdale, it could quell TU's momentum if it could get one more foul called on Harris (she has two). Another foul and Harris may be down for another 10 minutes. Look for the Chargers to keep driving.

TU leads 40-37 with 15:58 left. Baute just missed two foul shots. She great defensively, but is 0 of 4 from stripe.

A layup by Lea Jones tied the game, but Mast comes back with a right side 3. She has 8, TU leads 43-40, 13:56 left.

Tiffin has its biggest lead, 47-40, but it's far from comfortable with 11:57 left. Baute made two free throws. She gets overshadowed because she doesn't start, but Amanda is a darn good player.

Give Hillsdale lots of credit. It simply makes plays when it looks lie TU will pull away. The Dragons lead, 49-45 with 9:48 left.

A couple of big shots and TU has a 56-47 lead with 7:07 left. Baute gets another board. Jaeb hits a stop-and-pop jumper and TU goes up 11. Now it's nine with 6:04 left.

Baute has had a big second half on boards. Harris has 14, TU up 10, 5:06 left. Harrison hits a jumper for Hillsdale and it's 8. Coming upon four minute mark and Mandy is fouled. She has a one and one but misses. Hillsdale has a 1-and-1 coming up, down 59-51 with 3:45 left.

Jaeb has 17, Harris 16 and a double double. Baute and Mast each have 8 as Dragons lead 63-54, with the ball and 1:54 left.

Dragons lead 67-54. Looks like Dragons will win their first home GLIAC tournament game. Jaeb has 19, but to me Harris is MVP with 16 points and 16 boards.
