Elite Sport, Culture Week to partner in October

One of the things that makes our community so great is the collaboration that takes place between Tiffin’s businesses and organizations. A fantastic example of this is Elite Sport and Culture Week, happening in October, which will bring Olympians to Tiffin.

Many different organizations, led by Tiffin University, have had a hand in ensuring the success of this great event, and Tiffin-Seneca Public Library is proud to do our part.

One major component of this will be the Three Pillar Program, which encourages children in kindergarten through sixth grade to complete activities related to the three pillars of Olympic values: sports, culture and education. The Sports Pillar can be earned at the YMCA all summer by participating in at least three youth fitness classes Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. The final two pillars, culture and education, can be earned right here at the library. Stop by the Junior Library Aug. 6-31 and look for the Elite Sport and Culture Week display.

One of the staples of Olympic values is culture, whether that be Olympic culture itself, or learning about and being exposed to many different cultures. To earn the Culture Pillar, children will hand-draw and color the flag of a country of their choice. Once children turn in their flag, along with their name and the name of their chosen country (spelled correctly!) at the Junior Library, they have completed their Culture Pillar. If drawing isn’t their forte, there is an additional way to earn the Culture Pillar. Because competition is a big part of the Olympics, children can create their own game and explain it to us in the Junior Department.

Education is another important Olympic value. In order to earn the Education Pillar, children must check out and read five books about sports. They will then write a list of the sports books and bring it back to the Junior Library. Many informative and educational books that fit the sports theme will be on display in the Junior Library. If you cannot find what you are looking for, ask a librarian. We would be more than happy to find the right book. And remember; if we don’t have it, we can probably still get a copy.

Those who complete the Three Pillar Program are invited to Elite Sport and Culture Week’s Festival of Champions at Tiffin University’s Heminger Center on Oct. 23. The first 600 will receive a prize and have their picture taken with an Olympian. Elite Sport and Culture Week will take place Oct. 20-25 and will be hosted by Tiffin University, Terra State Community College and Mercy Health — Tiffin Hospital.
