Keep city out of property business

In an A-T article dated Feb. 28, Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz discussed buying the Stalsworth Hotel property. In that article, the city engineer stated it would cost $110,000 to tear down the hotel and former Salvation Army building, and the mayor stated it would not exceed that figure.

In a March 19 article, the mayor said the low estimate to remove the two buildings is $140,000.

I beg our city fathers to stay out of the real estate business, as it appears you have no idea about the subject. One of the two above-mentioned articles stated you would have to tweak some rules to use venture capital funds to make the purchase, just like tweaking the rules to allow beer in the park.

Why doesn’t someone figure out how to tweak some rules and use funds to repair and maintain streets?
