A secure investment

Fall semester began Wednesday for Heidelberg University students, and classes begin Monday for students at Tiffin University. The annual Around the Town event, which shows these students the services, restaurants, businesses and entertainment their new community offers, is set for 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. today in the parking lot next to the RTA Building downtown.

This is an opportune moment to tip our cap to the two universities and notice the impact — financially and culturally — they have on the city of Tiffin.

Consider the constant improvements at the two campuses. During the past academic year, TU opened the nation’s largest esports arena. Over the summer, Heidelberg spent $4.2 million on new turf and a new track at Hoernemann Stadium, renovation and beautification of Pfleiderer Hall and phase two of the Hoernemann Refectory renovation.

A unique aspect of such development is the fact that neither of these institutions will pack up and move its operations to another city, state or country. We’ve seen that with some corporations from Tiffin’s industrial past.

Add to that the economic impact of all the students these two universities bring to town, plus faculties and support staff. Plus, the cultural impact of 400-plus international students.

Keep that in mind as you see new residents exploring the town while sporting apparel with the school colors and logos. And give them a friendly welcome.
