Funding for parks should continue
When Gov. John Kasich and Ohio legislators tackled an enormous budget gap just a few years ago, they had to make truly painful cuts in state spending. Among them was money to maintain state parks.
Now, the governor and lawmakers plan to provide $110 million during the next two years to take care of some of the parks’ more pressing problems.
That’s a good start – but only that. One estimate states the park system has a $574 million backlog of deferred maintenance projects.
Kasich and lawmakers should find more money in the future, to ensure the park system is maintained.
