New park could be right idea, right time

A new Tiffin park proposed by a local leadership development program could be a case of the right development happening at the right place at the right time.

Members of the current class of participants in Leadership Seneca County hope to develop the park on an often overlooked piece of green space on the east side of the Sandusky River between Market and Perry streets.

To refresh your memory, what would be called Leadership Park is eyed near the city parking lot next to the closed Stalsworth Hotel and former livery behind it. The city purchased those properties this year and plans to raze them in 2014. Seneca Industrial and Economic Development Corp. has offered to buy the vacant land.

If commercial redevelopment of the site by a business catering to young adults comes to fruition, it would make sense to improve the adjacent area. That includes the current green space.

The total cost for the project is $48,730. The leadership group asked for $20,000 from the city and plans to apply for grants from SIEDC which would leave $9,000 to be raised by the group.

This project has the potential to develop an entertainment venue downtown. The pieces – green space, soon-to-be vacant land and project leaders – are falling into place. Financing and successful redevelopment could make this the right effort at the right time.
