Joan Louise (Mason) Shriver, also known as “Jake,” 89, of Bettsville, passed away Saturday night, May 11, 2019, at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born Jan. 4, 1930, in Bellevue, to Howard Elverson and Pauline Olive (Hassinger) Mason. She married Carman Carl Shriver June 22, 1947, in Covington, Kentucky, and he preceded her in death Sept. 24, 2011.

Survivors include her children, Cynthia L. (Ronald) Cook and Kipp L. Shriver, both of Bettsville; grandchildren, Chad J. (Tammy) Cook of Genoa, Heather J. (Chris) DeTray of Oak Harbor and Amber I. (Michael) Bage of New Smyrna Beach, Florida; great-grandchildren, Micheal W. and Austin L. Cook, Derek J., Dylan D. and Makena L. Gottron, Clifford L. DeTray, Aiden and Nolan Bage; five stepgrandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren; sister, Eileen K. “Katie” (John) Schoendorf of Millersville; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son Michael Lee Shriver April 24, 1992; and grandson, Scott A. Shriver, June 21, 2004.

She was a 1947 graduate of Melmore High School. Joan retired in 1997 from AutoLite, Fostoria, following 32 years of employment. She also served as billing clerk for the Village of Bettsville for 30 years. She had a passion for cooking, reading, working crossword puzzles, and a love of cats. She will be remembered for always having her nose in a book and a cat on her lap.

Per her wishes, a graveside service will begin at 10 a.m. May 25, 2019, in Pleasant Union Cemetery, Old Fort.

Engle-Shook Funeral Home & Crematory in Tiffin is assisting the family with arrangements.
