Lester E. ‘Gene’ Staib Jr.
Lester E. “Gene” Staib Jr., 68, of New Riegel, passed away at 5:50 p.m. Sunday Oct. 7, 2018, at Good Shepherd Home, Fostoria.
He was born July 3, 1950, in Tiffin, to Lester E. and Dorothy (Reamer) Staib Sr. He married Eileen M. Nye June 16, 1973, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, New Riegel, and she survives in New Riegel.
Also surviving is his mother, Dorothy Staib of Fostoria; a son, Scott (Christine) Staib of New Riegel; a daughter, Angie (Jeff) Sealey of Republic; six grandchildren, Christian, Sierra, Trenton and Braden Staib and Brody and Carter Sealey; a brother, Dave (Elaine) Staib of New Riegel; and a sister, Kathy (Greg Koerper) Houck of Bradenton, Florida.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lester E. Staib Sr., and a brother, Thom Staib.
Lester was a 1968 graduate of New Riegel High School and attended Tiffin University. He was employed at Copeland Corp., Buckeye Auto Parts 1985-1999 and retired from Quick Tab II, Tiffin, in 2012 after 13 years of service.
He was a proud member of the U.S. Army, serving in the Vietnam era 1969-1971. He was a life member of AMVETS Post 48 in Tiffin, a member of All Saints Parish, New Riegel, a 46-year member of New Riegel American Legion and a 33-year member of New Riegel Fire Department. He also served on New Riegel, Big Springs and Seneca Township Fire District, where he was on the board of directors for many years. Lester proudly was presented the Zenobia Shriners Certificate for continuous service with the fire department and Zenobia Shriners Award for fire prevention with school children. Lester was an active member of American Legion and enjoyed partaking in its many activities. As a member of New Riegel American Legion, he served seven years throughout his life as post commander, and during five of those years, all-time high membership was achieved. He also spent nine years as a trustee, 33 years as the Americanism and Buckeye Boys State chairman, and 28 years as S.A.L. adviser. He also served four years as county commander, four years as county 1st vice commander and three years as county 2nd vice commander. Lester also was very active in American Legion 5th District, where he served one year as district commander, one year as 1st vice commander, one year as 2nd vice commander, three years as sergeant-at-arms, one year as president of the Past Commanders Club, three years as national security chairman, and assisted for three years with the 5th District Legion Baseball Tournament. He also served three years as division commander and one year as department of Ohio assistant sergeant-at-arms. In 2014, Lester was named 5th District Legionnaire of the Year.
He enjoyed many things in life, including coaching baseball, woodburning and music. Most of all, Lester loved his family and will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather.
Visitation will take place 3-8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018, at Hoening & Son Funeral Home, 133 W. Tiffin St., Fostoria, where New Riegel American Legion will begin a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. Additional visitation will take place 1 hour prior to the Mass at church.
A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 15, 2018, at All Saints Parish, New Riegel, with the Rev. Timothy Kummerer presiding. Burial will follow in St. Boniface Cemetery, with military honors rendered by New Riegel American Legion.
