Dorothy Elizabeth Waire
Dorothy Elizabeth Waire, 93, of Tiffin, passed away peacefully at 5:40 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8, 2018, at her residence, surrounded by her loving family and friends.
She was born April 26, 1925, in Detroit, Michigan, to Alfred W. and Elizabeth E. (Wagner) Calmes. Dorothy married the love of her life, Donald Richard Waire, Nov. 29, 1947, at St. Nicholas Church in Frenchtown, and he preceded her in death Aug. 11, 2009.
Dorothy is survived by her three children, Dianne (Bob) Reinhart of Fostoria, Gregory (Ann) Waire of Tiffin and Gary (Tammy) Waire of Gahanna; 10 grandchildren, Jeff Reinhart of Greenville, South Carolina, Sarah Reinhart of Valico, Florida, Chris Arend, Joanna Spaun and Randy Waire, all of Tiffin, Austyn Hall of Port Charlotte, Florida, and Sydney Waire of Sarasota, Florida, and three stepgrandchildren, Tony, Alexa and Anna Reams of Miamisburg; and 11 great-grandchildren, Zach and Nathan Arend, Garrett, Allie, Hannah and Rachel Spaun and Mara, Luke and Hope Waire, all from Tiffin, and Lilly and Greyson Hall of Port Charlotte, Florida.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Edward Calmes, who died five days after birth due to an allergy to formula; and a sister, Elizabeth Ann Calmes, who died seven days after birth, also due to formula. After Dorothy was born, her mom died five days later. She also had a brother, Larry (Steadman) Calmes.
Dorothy was raised at her grandma and grandpa’s, John B. (Jane) Calmes and Rose Calmes, farm house in Frenchtown. Her life was full of chickens, cows, cats and dogs, Tootsie and Fritz. She attended a two-room schoolhouse at St. Nicholas Church and later graduated from New Riegel High School in 1944. Dorothy loved sewing, knitting, crocheting, gardening in her flowers, playing cards, the Buckeyes, baking cakes for family and friends, going to Anna Mae Benner ceramic classes and having lunch with the ladies.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Tiffin and Catholic Ladies of Columbia. Dorothy worked on the election board, Screw and Nut in Fostoria, Heinz Co. in Fremont and General Electric in Tiffin. She also lived with the Gottliebs for a short time, working as a housekeeper, and cleaned Dr. Drake’s office and residence.
Friends may visit with the family 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018, with a wake service being held at 3:30 p.m., at Engle-Shook Funeral Home, 135 N. Washington St., Tiffin, OH 44883, (419) 447-1221.
A Mass of Christian burial will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2018, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Joseph Szybka officiating. A rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to the Mass. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Stein Hospice, St. Joseph Catholic Church or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
