Barbara Joan Haubert
Barbara Joan Haubert died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014, at Valley View Health Care Center, Fremont.
She was born June 24, 1936, in Fremont, to William and Reba (Hillyer) Semer. Barbara graduated in 1954 from Jackson-Burgoon High School and on April 16,1955, she married her high school sweetheart, James Haubert. They loved and supported each other at their family farm home, east of Helena, for 52 years until his death May 17, 2007.
In 1973, Barbara graduated from BGSU and began a 34-year career in teaching, which fulfilled a lifetime dream. She felt blessed to be able to share her love of learning with students at St. Ann’s, Fremont, and Millersville, St. Mary’s elementary schools. Barbara encouraged her students to spend time in service with the Jackson Township Food Distribution and the School of Hope Special Olympics for many years.
Participating in many activities in the community, church and family filled her life. In the community, she was a founding member of the Lakota Young Farm Wives (winning the state Young Homemakers Award in 1968) and Sandusky County Pork Producers women’s group. This group promoted pork products and enjoyed friendships at the Country Kitchen each year during the fair. She was a 4-H adviser for 10 years. She also volunteered at the Jackson Township Board of Elections and Fremont Food Pantry. Barbara also was co-chairman of the family Relay for Life Team “Fishing for a Cure.” She was a member of Millersville, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where she was a eucharistic minister, PSR teacher and member of the funeral committee and choir. She also was active in Fremont Deanery Serra Club.
Barbara, along with her husband, enjoyed family vacations in Amish country, Outer Banks, North Carolina, Northern Michigan and fishing on Lake Erie. They enjoyed holidays, as well as social and school activities with the family.
Surviving are her precious children, Timothy (Jeanne) Haubert of Burgoon, Gregory (Rene) Haubert of Tiffin, Elizabeth (Michael) Gabel of Fremont, Rebecca (Trace) O’Brien of Sylvania and Mary (Mark) Manning of Grafton; 20 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her husband; parents; three sons, James Jr., Joseph and Philip; and a sister, Janice Carroll.
