John Sterling McLaughlin
John Sterling McLaughlin passed away Saturday, July 5, 2014, at Good Shepherd Home, Fostoria, surrounded by family.
John was born Nov. 7, 1934, in Fostoria, to Alford and Kathryn McLaughlin. He married Shirley Ann Brewer Dec. 19, 1954, and she survives.
He also is survived by three children, Patricia A. (Gordon) McLaughlin-Lopez, David S. (Laura) McLaughlin and J. Michael (Kim) McLaughlin. He enjoyed and loved his 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by a sister, Ann Shaffer (Richard) of Michigan City, Indiana.
John was preceded in death by a daughter, Judith Kay McLaughlin.
After retiring from the Union Carbide facility in Fostoria, he went on to work at Geary Family YMCA where the children quickly came to know him as John, “The guy who could fix anything.”
John also proudly served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper, often joking about jumping out of a “perfectly good airplane.”
Over the years, John and Shirley had the good fortune of being able to travel the country either on his motorcycle or in their motorhome.
John spent his final years in the Alzheimer Unit at Good Shepherd Home, Fostoria, where he was loved and cared for as if he was one of their own. Not only did they take care of Dad, they also took care of Mom, myself and the entire family trying to cope with what life had dealt. It was obvious he was loved by everyone and he loved each and every one of you. A special thank you does not begin to cover the impact you have had on our lives.
Graveside services will begin at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2014, at Knollcrest Cemetery, 18085 SR 12, Arcadia. The Rev. Kay Hatch will officiate. Military honors will be performed by the United Veterans of Fostoria. Local arrangements were handled by Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria.
Memorial contributions may be made to Union United Methodist Church.
