H. Duane Applequist
Hugh Duane Applequist passed away Sunday evening, July 27, 2014, at his home.
He was born Jan. 31, 1924, in Jamestown, New York, to Carl Hugo and Ethyle Cornelia (nee Michael) Applequist. He graduated from Jamestown High School in June 1941. He married Marian Audrey Swan Sept. 9, 1944. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from March 1943-December 1945 as a pilot, teaching twin engine flying and volunteered for service in B-29 bombers as flight engineer/third pilot. Duane graduated from University of Cincinnati with a degree in mechanical engineering in June 1951 and took post-graduate studies at University of Cincinnati and Case Institute of Technology. Duane was employed by The Standard Oil Company of Ohio as a refinery engineer, advanced into upper management and retired Jan. 1, 1984.
He was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Frank.
He and Marian had two children, Barbara Ann (Paul) Aley of Tiffin and Michael Duane (Cathy) Applequist of Goose Creek, South Carolina. There are seven grandchildren, Jonathan P. (Sarah) Aley, Karilyn P. (Ray) Meeker, Owen T. Applequist, Miki S. Applequist, Lee M. Applequist, Philip (Jennifer) Beckley and Erica (John) Stasiek and 12 great-grandchildren.
Duane was a member of Bethany Covenant Church, serving in various capacities. He was on the board of Mission Meadow Camp and was a member of the board of the Great Lakes Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church of America, serving two terms as chairman. He also served as secretary of the Evangelical Covenant Church Stewardship Commission.
While residing in the Cleveland area, Duane was active in community affairs and professional societies. He was a member of the Cleveland Engineering Society, American Institute of Industrial Engineers, American Society of Safety Engineers, American Petroleum Institute Safety and Fire Protection Committee and the Manufacturers Chemical Society Safety Committee. His volunteer work included Boy Scouts of America (Greater Cleveland Council), Junior Achievement adviser and consultant for the Cleveland United Way Management Assistance program.
In 1960, Duane was awarded a patent for calibrating flow meters in a petroleum refinery continuous gasoline blending system. He was a contributing author to the 1970 Production and Inventory Handbook with a section on Short Interval Scheduling.
Marian and he moved to Tiffin in 1991 and joined the Trinity United Church of Christ. He had served on the church council, the evangelism and visitation committee, the Shepherd’s Family Committee and Keenagers.
He has been active in Tiffin community work. He and his wife belonged to Mercy Hospital’s Meals on Wheels program for 10 years and he was actively involved with The Ritz Theatre, serving on the restoration finance committee and later as chairman of the restoration and renovation committee. In 1997, he was named Ritz Theatre Volunteer of the Year. In addition, he served four years on the WSOS Board of Trustees, the city of Tiffin Charter Review Commission in 2000, the St. Francis Memorial Foundation Board and chairman of its Investment Committee, The Advertiser-Tribune Readers’ Review Committee, the Allen Eiry Board of Trustees and the Seneca County Metropolitan Housing Authority Board. In 2005, Duane was named Seneca County’s outstanding senior citizen and he was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Tiffin, the Friends of the Library, the Tiffin Stamp Club and the American Philatelic Society.
Duane enjoyed traveling, reading, stamp collecting, rose gardening and, above all, his family. God rest his soul.
His memorial service will begin at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, at Trinity United Church of Christ, Tiffin with the Rev. Dr. Louis Dorsch officiating.
Burial will be at a later date.
Friends may visit and share stories 2-4 p.m. Saturday at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, OH 44883, (419) 447-2424, and 12:30 p.m. until the time of her funeral Sunday at the church.
