Gene E. Ruehle

Gene E. Ruehle, 90, of Tiffin, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2014, at Ryan Hospice Home, Phoenix, Ariz.

He was born Dec. 1, 1923, in McCutchenville, to Glenn Ruehle and Eva (Houpt) Ruehle. He lived in Bloomville before becoming a lifelong Tiffin resident.

He graduated from Tiffin University and married his high school sweetheart, Olive Windau, Sept. 4, 1943, and they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past September.

Survivors include his loving wife, Olive F. Ruehle of Tiffin; two sons, Richard (Dianna) Ruehle of Tiffin and Jerry Ruehle of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters, Jacquelyn S. Repp of Anchorage, Alaska, and Patricia J. Bastani, formerly of South Africa, now living in Anchorage; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Maxine Liss of Bristol, England, and Toby Troutman of Florida; and a brother, Terry Ruehle of McCutchenville.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Nevin Walton; and a sister, Genevieve Walton.

Gene was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II. He retired in 1981 from Nabisco Co. after 36 1/2 years. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Tiffin, Elks Tiffin Lodge No. 94, AMVETS Post No. 48, Eagles Aerie No. 402 and American Legion Post 169.

He enjoyed following the Cleveland Indians, The Ohio State Buckeyes, loved March Madness, playing cards, going to Raceway Park, Toledo, supporting youth sports in Tiffin and traveling to all 50 states. He also enjoyed traveling to Phoenix and living there for three months each winter for 28 years.

His Mass of Christian burial will begin at 11 a.m. Monday, March 10, 2014, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Tiffin, with the Rev. Gary Walters officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Tiffin. A rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to Mass.

Friends may visit with the family from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, March 9, at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, OH 44883, (419) 447-2424.

Memorial contributions may be made to Valley of The Sun Hospice Center, Phoenix, Ariz., youth baseball or a charity of the donor’s choice.
