Sara ‘Sally’ H. DuGene

Sara “Sally” H. DuGene, 88, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., formerly of Michigan City, Ind., died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014.

She was born July 7, 1925, in Bellevue, to Marjorie and Gaylord Huston.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in business from Ohio Wesleyan University, where she was the president of her sorority and the pianist for the university’s orchestra. After a career in business in Cleveland, she and her husband, Jack Mahan, moved to Bloomville, where they owned a hardware store and she taught business education at the local high school. She loved music and played the piano and sang in several church choirs. For the last several years of her life, she was lovingly cared for at Franke at Seaside in Mt. Pleasant.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert DuGene; and her sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Dale Campbell.

She is survived by her children, Mary Ellen (Dr. James) Engle, of Mt. Pleasant, Frederick (Sally) Mahan of Bluffton, S.C., Jinny (Donald) Przybylinski, of Michigan City, Ind., and Dr. Michael (Tina) Mahan, of Black River Falls, Wis.; grandchildren Max Engle of Mt. Pleasant, Jay Vornhagen of Seattle, Kendra (John) Meyer of Fishers, Ind., Matthew Mahan of Indianapolis, Maryellen Przybylinski of Royal Oak, Mich., Joey Przybylinski of Indianapolis, Oliver (Katrina) Mahan and Sidney Mahan of Madison, Wis., and Huston Mahan of La Crosse, Wis.; and great-grandchildren Sydney and Max Meyer, both of Fishers, Ind.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at Franke at Seaside, 1885 Rifle Range Road, Mt. Pleasant. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel.
