Annabel Jean (Foght) Benner

Annabel Jean (Foght) Benner, 89, of Tiffin, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, at Ruffing Family Care Center, Tiffin, after suffering a stroke and fracturing her hip.

She was born May 5, 1924, in Tiffin, to Edison Aristotle and Lelah Beth (Adams) Foght. She married Norman F. Benner Sept. 15, 1952, in Angola, Ind., and he preceded her in death March 27, 2006.

Annabel was a dog lover and breeder, having 22 dogs at her house at one time. One of her favorite T-shirts states, “I prefer to be in the company of dogs.” The last two dogs Annabel owned were two little Yorkies she got around Christmas time, Holly and Berry.

Annabel was a hard worker and had many jobs over her lifetime. She met Norman while driving taxi cab, and also sold real estate, Sarah Coventry jewelry and Avon and was a beautician. She also worked at the Ohio Bell telephone office for 18 years, having the opportunity to travel to California during World War II to answer the call for needed operators. She worked until she was 79, retiring from the mailroom at The Advertiser-Tribune.

Annabel loved the color purple so much, there was no other color, according to her. If she could get something in purple, she would. She even had a purple car at one time.

Annabel ran a strict household, keeping her domain spotlessly clean and having everything in its place. She was a force to be reckoned with, but had a soft spot for her granddaughters and her great-grandkids. Being “Great MawMaw” was the highlight of her life. If you wanted to see her smile, just mention her great-grandkids.

Annabel is survived by her son, Richard “Dick” (Janell) Benner of New Washington; daughter, Patsy “Bud” Hill of rural Tiffin; three granddaughters, Nikki (John) Luman of Melmore, and Joni Johnson and Heidi (Anthony) Ramirez, both of rural Tiffin; five great-grandchildren, Enola “Noli,” twins Hezekiah “Hez” and Elijah “LiLi,” and Ariana “Peanut” Ramirez and Parker Kin; two sisters, Naomi Fruth of Attica and Lillian (Gene) Schatzinger of Tiffin; a brother-in-law, Charles Fruth of Tiffin; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Timmy (Morgan Rasnake) Johnson and Akili “Kiki” Johnson, both of Mansfield; and a stepgreat-great-grandson, Jerrick Johnson.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; her dear sister, Millicent Fruth; beloved son-in-law, Jeff Hill; and brother, Richard Foght, who at age 11 lost his life trying to save another boy.

Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at Walton-Moore Funeral Home, 201 W. Saffel Ave., Sycamore, (419) 927-6252.

Her funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Bryan Schatzinger, her nephew, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Seneca County.
