Ethella Margaret (Hartenstein) Cook

Ethella Margaret (Hartenstein) Cook, 85, of Fremont, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, at Stein Hospice, Sandusky.

She was born Sept. 2, 1928, in Liberty Township, Seneca County, to Alfred F. and Cora A. (Bullinger) Hartenstein. She was a 1946 graduate of Bettsville High School. Ethella married Albert D. Cook Oct. 1, 1949, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Fremont, with Fr. Bertrand Schenk officiating. They shared 64 wonderful years together.

Ethella worked for Howard Zink’s, Fremont, after high school. She was primarily a homemaker after marriage, occasionally working on her sister’s farm.

Ethella was one of the founding members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she was member of the Sacred Heart choir and Altar Rosary Society. She was known for her love of gardening, canning, family parties and get-togethers, yard work, traveling and volunteering for her church. She also was a 4-H adviser and taught sewing.

Along with her husband, Albert, she is survived by 15 children, Marsha Cook of Fremont, Ronald (Norma) Cook of Huron, Gene (Becky) Cook of Clyde, Loraine (Mitch) Luman of Evansville, Ind., Bruce Cook of Chuluota, Fla., Andrea Carter and Jude (Lisa) Cook, both of Fremont, Christopher Cook of New Albany, Norman (Tess) Cook of Fremont, Patrice (John) Beauchemin of Fairfax Station, Va., Dale (Anne) Cook of Port Clinton, Karen (George) Weissinger of Fremont, Teresa (Kevin) Wasserman of Woodville, Scott (Denise) Cook of North Lawrence and Edward Cook of Perrysburg; 29 grandchildren, Ryan, Emily, Austin, Jason, Kevin, Adam, Dean, Jeremy, David, Nathan, Tyler, Elijah, Kyle, Caroline, Keith, Travis, Natalie, Eric, Ellen, Andrew, Megan, Rachel, Jacob, Jared, Callie, Bennett, Ava, Danielle and Matthew; a stepgrandson, Cameron; nine great-grandchildren; seven siblings, Alfreda Dannemiller of Willard, Paul (Evelyn) Hartenstein of Wakeman, Stephen (Carmela) Hartenstein and Judith Schleter, both of Tiffin, Gregory (Elaine) Hartenstein of Henrietta, N.Y., Patrick (Ann) of New Riegel and Michael (Sue) Hartenstein of Fremont; two brothers-in-law, Ray Cunningham of Fremont and Stanley Miller of Tiffin; a sister-in-law, Marilyn (Cook) Freeh of Fremont; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Elizabeth Cook; her parents; two sisters, Gladys Cunningham and Mercedes Miller; and two granddaughters, Brianna and Autumn Carter.

Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. at Wonderly Horvath Hanes Funeral Home and Crematory, 425 E. State St., Fremont, OH 43420.

Her Mass of Christian burial will begin at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 550 Smith Road, Fremont, with Fr. Kenneth Lill officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Fremont.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Bishop Hoffman Catholic Schools or Stein Hospice of Sandusky.
