Robert ‘Bob’ Lawrence Callaghan

Robert “Bob” Lawrence Callaghan, 92, passed away peacefully Friday, Sept. 13, 2013, surrounded by family at Wesley Long Hospital’s Palliative Care, Greensboro, N.C. He is now joined again, in heaven, with his beloved wife, Lois.

Bob was born June 9, 1921, in Bellevue, to Louise Cook Callaghan and Robert L. Callaghan Sr. He spent his early years in Lakewood and Cleveland attending John Marshall High School for two years until the family returned to Bellevue. Bob played football at Bellevue High School and received a scholarship to Case School of Applied Science (now known as Case Western Reserve), Cleveland, where he studied engineering and played football. He graduated in December 1942 and was called to active duty with the U.S. Navy in 1943. In 1944, Bob was assigned to Bombing Squadron 112 as an engineering officer in Morocco, North Africa, and in February 1945 was sent to England until the war ended.

In January 1946, Bob was promoted to a full lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. After fulfilling his duty, he returned to Case for a graduate degree in industrial engineering. He then began a life-long career with National Machinery Company, Tiffin, in sales and serving as vice president of sales until his retirement.

Through family connections Bob met the love of his life, Mary “Lois” Sweetman. They were married for 53 years and raised their four children in Tiffin. After Lois’s death in 2001, Bob stayed in Tiffin until 2006 when he moved to Pennybyrn at Maryfield, High Point, N.C., to be close to his family.

Bob also was preceded in death by his son, Tom, and brother, Jim.

He is survived by his devoted family, daughter, Ann Callaghan; twin sons, Steve (Amy) and Nevin (Katherine); his brother, Dan Callaghan of Tiffin; and his five grandchildren, Christopher, Connor, Kelsey, Collin, and Reilly Callaghan.

The family would like to thank all of the special people at Pennybyrn who cared for Bob these past several years. He really appreciated the loving care he received, as did we.

A memorial service will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at the chapel at Pennybyrn, High Point, N.C. His interment will be in Tiffin.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Pennybyrn of Maryfield, Resident Care Fund, 109 Penny Road, High Point, NC 27260.
