Richard A. ‘Dick’ Mathews
Dick Mathews, 81, of Fremont, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his family.
He was born June 20, 1932, in Fremont, the son of W. Frank and Mildred (Clark) Mathews. He was a 1950 graduate of Fremont Ross High School.
Dick served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Pittsburgh as a machinist mate, first class, from 1952-1956 during the Korean War. He was awarded the Navy Occupation Service Medal (Europe Clasp), China Service Medal (Extended), National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
Dick married Madonna M. Foos April 20, 1957, in Gibsonburg, and she preceded him in death May 17, 2008. He worked as a tool and die maker and was packaging department supervisor at Crescent Mfg. Co. until his retirement. A model for working hard and living simple, Dick took every opportunity to tell a story with an emphatic punch line and a healthy dose of sharp wit. He never tired of cruising country roads or around Lake Erie, and is fondly remembered for his love of cars.
Dick is survived by his six children, Mark (Peggy) Mathews, Cheryl (Dave) Saller and Anita (Greg) Printy, all of Fremont, Amy (Phil) Hoffman of Helena, Michael Mathews of Ross and Kimberly (Brian) Boggs of Upper Arlington; 15 grandchildren, Lauren, Jordan and Hannah Mathews, Kyle and Monica Saller, Amanda, Matthew and Emma Hoffman, Cody (Tabitha) and Dylan Bischoff, Nathanael, Joshua and Bethany Mathews, Anna and Samuel Boggs; and two sisters, Janet Sellers and Marcia Grumme.
