Stephen L. Schafer
Stephen L. Schafer, 65, of Wickham Road, rural Sycamore, died at 8:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, at Altercare of Bucyrus.
He was born Feb. 26, 1948, in Tiffin, to Robert and Dortha (Spayth) Schafer. He married Sue (Kingery) Schafer Dec. 21, 1969, and she survives.
Surviving are the following children, Deborah S. Schafer of Bucyrus and Brian (Tami) Schafer, rural Crestline; two grandchildren, Camryn and Grady Schafer; and two brothers, Richard E. (Jealea) Schafer of rural Sycamore and Michael R. (Karen) Schafer of rural Bloomville.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Joe A. Schafer, May 27, 1998, besides his parents.
Stephen was a retired bank manager starting out with 2nd National Bank, Bucyrus, and then United Bank, taking care of their branches in Caledonia, Waldo and Marion. He was in the banking business for 39 years. He was a 1966 graduate of Wynford High School and a 1970 graduate of Tiffin University. He was a member of St. John’s Baseline United Church of Christ where he formerly served as a deacon, an elder and the church treasurer. He was a former member of the Lykens Volunteer Fire Department and the Tiro-Auburn Volunteer Fire Department He was a member of the Indian Mill Antique Tractor Association and the Crawford County Antique Farm Machinery Association, where at one time he was a trustee and treasurer.
For hobbies, Stephen loved to go look for antiques and collect antique tractors, especially John Deere tractors. He also liked to do woodworking, gardening, bird watching and spending time with his grandchildren.
A funeral for Stephen will be 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at St. John’s Baseline United Church of Christ, Bloomville, with the Rev. Robert F. Haskins officiating. Burial will follow at St. John’s Baseline Cemetery.
Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, at Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore, and also from 10-11 a.m. Friday at the church.
