Ray E. Lofton
Ray E. Lofton, 93, died at 1:45 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2013, at Lima Memorial Health System.
He was born April 15, 1920, to Chester L. and Mabel A. Shiley Lofton. He married Florence Beaudry July 12, 1942, and she preceded him in death March 23, 2009.
Mr. Lofton proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He twice was injured during World War II and also was wounded Jan. 13, 1945, during the Battle of the Bulge, for which he received the Purple Heart with the Oak Leaf Cluster. He was also honored as a Bronze Star recipient. He additionally received the World War II Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
In 1982, he retired from Detroit and Toledo Shoreline Railroad, also known as Grand Trunk & Western Railroad, after 36 years as a brakeman and conductor. He had been a member of First Assembly of God since 1995. Some of his fondest times were spent outdoors, especially while hunting and fishing. He was truly a family man, who loved making memories with his children and grandchildren. He will be remembered for sharing his life stories with his family and friends.
Survivors include three sons, Eldon R. (Mary) Lofton of Bowling Green, Paul D. Lofton of Lima, and Philip J. (Melinda) Lofton of Fort Jennings; three daughters, Ellyn Lofton of Toledo, Karen Sue (Jerry) Wayne of Crestview, Fla., and Yvette (Dennis) Hauenstein of Waynesfield; two brothers, Dalton Lofton of Bedford, Ky., and Mervin Lofton of Tiffin; two sisters, Joyce Runion and Mary Fitch, both of Tiffin; 16 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Kathleen Lofton; a brother, Charles Lofton; and a sister, Clarabell Cantrell.
His funeral, with military rites, will begin at noon today, July 9, 2013, at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, Eastside Chapel, Lima. The Rev. Jerry Hall will officiate. Burial will follow at Highlands Memory Gardens, Waterville.
