Sister Mary Charles was born June 25, 1922, in Reed, to Charles and Celestine (Hahl) Scherley.

She is survived by a sister, Margaret Williams of Sandusky.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six sisters, Helen Russett, Mary Laub, Lucille Rhoad, Bernadette Hahler, Rose Meggitt and Florence Evans; and three brothers, Leonard, Arthur and Edwin Scherley.

She also served as principal at St. John the Baptist, Payne and Mother of Sorrows, North Auburn.

Upon leaving the field of education, Sister Mary Charles’s ministry led her to St. Francis Home in 1970, where she began ministering to the elderly instead of the “little ones.” While there, she served in many capacities: associate administrator, personnel director, supervisor of the front office, sacristan, receptionist and volunteer. At the time of her death, she was a minister of prayer and service.

During her 31 years of employment at St. Francis Home, she touched the lives of many residents by taking time from her busy day to speak with them, listen to them, offer them a helping hand, and pray for them. She also reached out to the family members of the residents and the employees.

Sister Mary Charles spent her entire life putting her faith into action by working cooperatively with others, serving others and caring for all creation in a Franciscan spirit of hospitality, simplicity and joy.
