Two people were injured in an accident at US 224 and SR 53 Friday evening.

Trooper Dante Hanns of the Fremont post of State Highway Patrol said Helen Spitler, 78, of Tiffin, was traveling west on US 224 in a 2014 GMC Acadia with Verle Spitler, 79, of Tiffin. Devan Ribley, 25, of Forest, was traveling south on SR 53 in a 2013 Kia Forte, he said.

Hanns said Spitler had a red light, pulled into the intersection and struck the driver side of the Forte, which went off the southwest corner of the road.

Assistant Chief Chris Daniel of Bascom Joint Fire District said the front air bags deployed in the Acadia and the side air bag deployed in the Forte. Crews had to pop the Forte’s door open to let the driver out, which took about four minutes, he said.

Helen Spitler and Ribley were transported by Bascom EMS to Mercy Health – Tiffin Hospital to be treated with non-life-threatening injuries, Hanns said.

Helen Spitler was cited with traffic control signal, he said.

Hanns said Helen Spitler and Ribley were wearing seatbelts, but Verle Spitler was not.

The accident was reported at 6:09 p.m. and Bascom EMS, Bascom Joint Fire District, the Echo unit, State Highway Patrol and D&D Total Repair responded to the scene.
